Doula: A True Crime is a three-part Canadian documentary series about Kaitlyn Braun and the doulas she contacted while repeatedly describing a sexual assault and a pregnancy with a stillborn child. The series was announced for CBC and CBC Gem, with a Canadian premiere date of October 7, 2026; check CBC’s current listings for availability and schedule.
What is Doula: A True Crime about?
Written, directed and produced by filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau, the series follows a case in which Braun contacted more than 40 doulas over nine months in 2022–2023. As doulas began questioning parts of her account, they connected online and sought answers. Reports describe the resulting case as involving 53 criminal charges. That is a reported charge count, not a count of convictions or a statement that every charge resulted in a finding of guilt.

The documentary is presented through three questions: what happened, how could it happen, and why? Its stated subject matter includes caregiving, intimacy, identity, mental health, connection, empathy and accountability. The framing considers both the harm caused and the ways empathy shaped people’s responses; it should not be read as offering a simple diagnosis of Braun.
What does the trailer and series feature?
Announcements describe extensive interviews and conversations between Bibeau and Braun, including Braun’s first extensive on-camera account. Channel Canada also reports participation from doulas and Brantford Police. These are descriptions of the series from its announcements, rather than an independent assessment of the finished episodes.

Bibeau said she was interested in understanding why the case unfolded as it did, and in how empathy could help illuminate a story without displacing the truth or the harm. The series is a documentary, not a scripted drama.
