No scientist confirmed that human remains belonged to Natalee Holloway. In 2017, a forensic scientist made a preliminary statement that bone fragments were human. A later federal court opinion recounted that the fragments were wild-boar bones planted by an informant. As of April 2026, Aruba’s prosecutor said the evidence was insufficient for murder or aggravated manslaughter, while the case file was to be made available to a prosecutor in Amsterdam.

What did the scientist confirm?

In August 2017, forensic scientist Jason Kolowski told Oxygen, as reported by ABC News, “They are human, and they are of Caucasian, European descent.” The fragments had been provided to a private investigation connected to Natalee’s father, Dave Holloway, and private investigator T.J. Ward. Kolowski’s statement was preliminary: it described the fragments, not their identity. ABC reported that the DNA analysis was mitochondrial and could not establish sex. It did not establish that the fragments came from Natalee. ABC News, August 25, 2017

What did the later court opinion say about the fragments?

A January 7, 2019 federal court opinion in Holloway v. Oxygen Media, LLC recounted a different conclusion: the bones came from a wild-boar skull, and informant John Ludwig admitted planting them. The opinion describes the publicized claims that the fragments were human and cautions against treating those claims as identification evidence. This is the court’s account of the civil-case record; it is not an identification of Natalee’s remains. U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, January 7, 2019

How do the 2017 claim and later official updates differ?

Source and date What it established
ABC News report, August 25, 2017 Reported Kolowski’s preliminary characterization of fragments as human and of Caucasian, European descent. It did not identify them as Natalee’s.
Federal court opinion, January 7, 2019 Recounted that the fragments were wild-boar bones and that Ludwig admitted planting them.
Aruba Public Prosecutor’s Office update, April 2, 2026 Reported the prosecutor’s assessment of the criminal evidence and the planned transfer of the file to the Amsterdam prosecutor after Beth Holloway filed a complaint.

What happened in the case after the bone-fragment story?

Van der Sloot’s 2023 federal plea and sentence

Natalee Holloway, 18, disappeared in Aruba on May 30, 2005, while visiting on a high-school graduation trip. In October 2023, Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty to U.S. federal extortion and wire-fraud charges connected to a scheme targeting her mother, Beth Holloway. The U.S. Department of Justice said he received $25,100 after promising information about Natalee’s remains and death, then gave information he later called “worthless.” He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. The department described the case as accountability for his scheme, not a recovery or identification of Natalee’s remains. U.S. Department of Justice, October 18, 2023

What the reported confession did—and did not—mean

During the 2023 proceeding, van der Sloot described killing Natalee and pushing her body into the sea. ABC News reported that he told investigators he kicked her, struck her with a cinderblock and pushed her body into the water. The judge said the confession in the Holloway case could not be used against him in that federal proceeding. It did not establish that remains had been found or identified. What is the official status as of April 2026?

On April 2, 2026, the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service reported that Aruba’s prosecutor had received documents requested from U.S. authorities in January 2026. Aruba’s prosecutor concluded there was then insufficient evidence for murder or aggravated manslaughter and said prosecution for manslaughter in Aruba was time-barred. After Beth Holloway filed a murder and/or manslaughter complaint in Amsterdam, Aruba said it would make its file available to the Amsterdam prosecutor. The update does not say that Amsterdam had filed charges. Netherlands Public Prosecution Service, April 2, 2026
