NYT Connections answers for September 19, 2025
Yellow — EVALUATE: GRADE, RANK, RATE, SCORE.
Green — EXHIBIT NERVOUSNESS: BLUSH, FIDGET, PACE, SWEAT.
Blue — THINGS THAT CAN RUN, ANNOYINGLY: DYE, MASCARA, NOSE, STOCKINGS.
Purple — PAPER ___: CLIP, TIGER, TOWEL, TRAIL.
Why the four groups fit
Yellow: EVALUATE
To grade, rank, rate, or score something is to assess it.
#1 Best Overall
Green: EXHIBIT NERVOUSNESS
Blushing, fidgeting, pacing, and sweating are behaviors or physical reactions associated with nervousness.
Blue: THINGS THAT CAN RUN, ANNOYINGLY
Dye can run in fabric, mascara can run, a nose can run, and stockings can develop runs. The meanings of “run” differ, which makes this the group where a surface-level interpretation can mislead.
Rank #2
Purple: PAPER ___
Each word completes a familiar phrase: paper clip, paper tiger, paper towel, and paper trail.

How to approach the puzzle
Try a phrase completion when several words seem to share a familiar companion: CLIP, TIGER, TOWEL, and TRAIL all follow “paper.” For the more unusual set, test whether a word has multiple meanings rather than assuming the tiles belong to a single subject area. BLUSH and MASCARA might suggest cosmetics or color, but NOSE points toward the different senses of “run.”
Connections groups four words by a shared feature, with group colors ordered yellow, green, blue, and purple. The specific clues and solutions here are for this dated puzzle; the color sequence should not be treated as proof of a fixed difficulty rule for every edition.
