That account was reported in August 2024, but Netflix did not publicly confirm the decision in the cited coverage, and director Joshua Rofé had not responded to confirm that the project was shelved.
What happened to the planned documentary?
The project was reported under two title variants: Vampires in Gem City and Vampires of Gem City. It was to focus on George Phillip Gall, who disappeared in Dayton in October 1994, and his family’s efforts to learn what happened to him.
In August 2024, Gall’s wife, Helen Gall, and family member Dan Phelan told reporters that producers had emailed them to say Netflix would not air the documentary. The Columbus Dispatch reported that Rofé had not responded to confirm whether Netflix had shelved it. The available reporting therefore supports describing the project as reportedly shelved—not as a cancellation Netflix publicly announced. The Columbus Dispatch’s August 20, 2024 report, syndicated by Yahoo News, and the Journal-News report from the same day recount the family’s account.
The project had been covered earlier in February 2024, when reports described its proposed premise but did not give a release date. The Columbus Dispatch’s earlier coverage used the variant title Vampires of Gem City.

Why did Netflix decide not to air it?
No reason is established in the cited reports. The family’s understanding, as described in the August coverage, was that producers had not given them an explanation. That is not the same as a confirmed statement of Netflix’s corporate rationale; Netflix’s own public explanation was not reported.
What was the Ohio vampire claim?
The documentary’s premise connected Gall’s disappearance to claims about vampires in Dayton’s goth scene. The 2024 coverage also described an earlier police officer’s belief that the disappearance involved a ritual. These are attributed claims and part of the story’s reported framing; the cited coverage does not establish that a vampire coven existed or that vampires caused Gall’s disappearance.

Helen Gall told the Journal-News, “I was hoping they would air it so people know what has happened to my husband so we could get the word out there.” The same report quoted her saying, “I need answers as to why they did this.”
Timeline of the project and reporting
- October 1994: Gall disappeared in Dayton, according to the Journal-News’s 2024 account.
- February 2024: Coverage described the documentary proposal and its vampire-related premise; no release date was reported.
- August 20, 2024: The Columbus Dispatch and Journal-News reported the family’s account that producers had said Netflix would not air the film. The Dispatch noted that Rofé had not confirmed the shelving.
- August 26, 2024: BGR recapped the Dispatch account; it did not independently establish Netflix’s reasoning.
Is this the same as Devil in Ohio?
No. Netflix’s fictional series Devil in Ohio is separate from the proposed documentary about Gall. Netflix Tudum described the series as loosely inspired by a true story while clarifying that the cult depicted in it was fictional. Showrunner Daria Polatin said, “We made it all up.” That statement concerns the fictional cult in Devil in Ohio, not the Dayton documentary or the facts of Gall’s disappearance. Netflix Tudum’s feature on the series explains the distinction.
