The distinction is that the widely reported figure was a jury verdict; the later court judgment states a different amount.
What the $71.5 million figure refers to
The figure comes from a September 2024 jury verdict in the dispute between MGA Entertainment and parties associated with the OMG Girlz. The claims concerned MGA’s L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. fashion dolls and alleged use of elements connected to the group’s trade dress, name, likeness, or identity. The Associated Press reported the jury’s award as approximately $17.9 million in actual damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages.
Those rounded figures describe the 2024 jury award, not the amount in the later amended final judgment. The distinction matters when a headline says the group “won” a particular sum: a jury verdict and the final judgment entered after post-trial proceedings are different procedural stages.
How the case moved from an MGA win to the later verdict
- 2020: MGA filed a declaratory action after a cease-and-desist dispute. The OMG Girlz-related parties asserted claims that included trade dress infringement and misappropriation of name, likeness, or identity.
- May–June 2023: In the first trial phase, the jury returned a verdict for MGA. The court entered judgment for MGA on June 13, 2023. That phase addressed 71 dolls and their packaging; the case later proceeded through additional trial and post-trial stages.
- September 2024: A jury found infringement or misappropriation for some dolls and returned the award widely reported as about $71.5 million.
- February 2025: In a post-trial order, the court adopted a disgorgement award of $17,872,253.
- July 22, 2026: The Central District of California entered an amended final judgment for $17,872,253 and set out the interest and enforcement terms described below.

What the amended judgment says about interest, fees, and enforcement
The amended judgment provides for post-judgment interest at 3.99%, compounded annually from July 22, 2026, until payment. It defers briefing on attorney fees and costs until after the appellate mandate. It also stays enforcement without bond until 30 days after that mandate.

The July 22 order describes what happens while the appeal process is pending, but the court materials cited here do not establish whether the Ninth Circuit issued a later ruling or mandate by October 7, 2026. The order’s stated stay and timing should therefore not be read as proof that enforcement has since begun or that the appeal has concluded.

They refer to different stages and should not be treated as competing descriptions of the same operative judgment. The $71.5 million figure is the rounded total reported for the September 2024 jury award. The $17,872,253 figure is the amount entered in the July 2026 amended final judgment after post-trial proceedings. For the latest judgment amount, the amended judgment—not the earlier verdict headline—is the relevant figure.
