“Superb Owl” is a playful re-spacing of “Super Bowl”: the letters become a phrase about an excellent owl. Around game day, people use it to share owl pictures and puns alongside football chatter. It is a recurring online joke, not an officially organized holiday.
Why do people say “Superb Owl”?
The joke depends on how the words are spaced. Change “Super Bowl” to “Superb Owl” and a football event suddenly sounds like a celebration of owls. Posts tagged “#SuperbOwl” or referring to “Superb Owl Sunday” lean into that contrast, often pairing the phrase with owl photos or bird-themed jokes.
That is why owls appear in social-media feeds during Super Bowl coverage: the posts are usually a deliberate pun, not a mistaken reference to a different event. The joke also gives people who are less interested in football an easy way to join the day’s conversation.
Where did the “Superb Owl” joke come from?
Its exact origin is unclear. Retrospective accounts often point to a February 2008 Twitter post as one early known example, but they do not establish who coined the phrase or identify a definitive first use. Sporting News describes the origins as unclear, while Know Your Meme records the 2008 post as an early instance.

The joke circulated more widely in the years that followed. A Miami Herald account recounts a 2011 Reddit thread, and a 2024 report notes Stephen Colbert’s use of the joke in a 2014 comedy segment. Those moments helped make the pun familiar, but neither establishes a single origin or explains every later post.
Is “Superb Owl Sunday” a real holiday?
It is best understood as an informal, recurring game-day joke. People use the phrase for playful owl content during Super Bowl conversation; there is no established organizer or formal observance behind it.

Is “Superb Owl” a trademark issue?
There is a documented trademark dispute involving a SUPERB OWL designation. A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceeding records an opposition and summarizes the NFL’s asserted marks. That record establishes that a dispute occurred; it does not mean that every casual use of the pun is automatically unlawful, nor does it make the phrase a guaranteed legal workaround. This is context about a specific proceeding, not legal advice about a particular use.

The joke can also lead to an interest in real owls. If a post makes you curious about a bird’s species, an owl field guide for your region can help with identification; it is an optional resource, not a requirement for understanding or taking part in the meme.
