R2-KT began as a pink astromech built for Katie Johnson, the young daughter of 501st Legion founder Albin Johnson, while she was battling brain cancer. The droid was meant to be Katie’s companion; after her death, it became a public symbol of support for children facing illness. The R2-KT project says the droid later appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, linking a personal tribute to the wider Star Wars story.
Who is R2-KT?
R2-KT is a pink, fan-built astromech droid created as a gift for Katie Johnson, daughter of Albin Johnson, who founded the 501st Legion. The R2-KT project credits builder Jerry Greene with masterminding the original droid and says members of the broader R2-building community contributed parts. According to the project’s account, the family received R2-KT at Shore Leave in Maryland in 2006. R2-KT project history
The droid was designed to be Katie’s companion as she battled brain cancer. The project describes her as Katie’s constant companion during that time. The pink astromech was not simply a themed gift: it was a way for a community of builders and Star Wars fans to offer the family something tangible and joyful.
How did R2-KT’s mission continue after Katie’s death?
After Katie died, R2-KT’s role expanded beyond the family tribute. The project says the droid became an ambassador for pediatric illness awareness, charity partnerships and community events, where its presence is intended to offer encouragement to children and families. The project calls her a “pink droid with the heart of gold.” R2-KT project history

That public work grew from the original meaning of the droid: a companion made for one child became a symbol that other children and families could encounter. R2-KT’s story is therefore both personal and communal, rooted in Katie and her family but carried forward by volunteers who bring the character to events and charitable activities.
How did R2-KT join Star Wars canon?
The R2-KT team reports that the droid appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and later in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The project identifies the 2015 film appearance as the point when R2-KT became part of Star Wars canon. R2-KT project history

This timeline should be understood as the project’s account: Lucasfilm’s own confirmation of the detailed sequence is not established here. The real-world R2-KT remains a fan-built droid and charitable ambassador; her appearances in officially released Star Wars stories are a separate part of her history. The project also notes appearances in comics and Lucasfilm promotions, but does not make those a substitute for clarifying the distinction between the real droid and the fictional character.
Is R2-KT connected to the 501st Legion or sponsored by Lucasfilm?
Albin Johnson’s connection to the 501st is part of R2-KT’s origin story, but that does not mean the Legion is a Lucasfilm organization. The 501st describes itself as an independent fan costuming organization, not affiliated with Lucasfilm, even though its name has appeared in official Star Wars material. 501st Legion

The R2-KT project likewise describes the AmbassaDroid Corps and Pink Force as fan organizations that are not sponsored by Lucasfilm. Their appearances and charitable work should not be mistaken for formal studio sponsorship. R2-KT AmbassaDroid program
How the R2-KT AmbassaDroid program works
The AmbassaDroid program invites builders to make and operate replica units for Star Wars events and local community service. Its guidelines frame participation as volunteer activity rather than a business opportunity. They outline expectations for full-size, professional-level astromechs, approved colors and markings, registration and approval, community appearances, and charity fundraising. R2-KT AmbassaDroid program
- Builders need to follow the program’s approval and registration process.
- Replica droids are intended for community appearances and charitable activity, not to generate business or profit.
- Merchandise bearing KT’s name or likeness requires prior approval under the program guidelines.
- The program’s reference color for the original droid is Circus Pink by Krylon; later units have used brighter magenta. This is a builder reference, not a general product endorsement.
- The program’s build data sheet asks participants to document body materials, drive system, lighting and sound.
These details help distinguish the program from buying a ready-made toy: AmbassaDroid participation involves constructing and operating a full-size replica while following the project’s rules.
