It draws on the Ballad of Mulan tradition, but it is a fictionalized Disney adaptation, not a verified account of a historical person. Disney later released a separate live-action version in 2020.
What is Mulan about?
In Disney’s 1998 animated film, Mulan disguises herself as Ping so she can take her aging father’s place in the Imperial Army. She trains alongside other soldiers, including under Captain Shang, while trying to protect her family’s honor and help defend China. Mushu, a small dragon, and the cricket Cri-Kee accompany her.

Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft directed the film, and Pam Coats produced it. Ming-Na Wen voices Mulan, with Lea Salonga providing her singing voice; the principal cast also includes Eddie Murphy, B.D. Wong, and Miguel Ferrer. Disney lists the release date as June 19, 1998, and the runtime as 1 hour 27 minutes. Disney Movies’ film page and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ page provide the official synopsis and credits.
Is Mulan based on a true story?
The animated film is an adaptation inspired by the Ballad of Mulan tradition, not a documentary or a historically verified biography. D23 describes the 1998 movie as based on a Chinese folktale; Disney’s press material for the 2020 film says its screenplay was suggested by the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.” Those descriptions identify the story tradition behind the films, but do not establish that the movies’ events or characters represent a documented person’s life.

The Disney version also makes its own choices, including comic characters and musical numbers. For production context, D23 says the animated film’s artistic supervisors spent three weeks in China sketching, photographing locations, and learning about the culture. It also describes a visual approach inspired by traditional Chinese graphic art and identifies the film as the first feature primarily produced at Disney Feature Animation’s Walt Disney World studio in Florida. These are Disney company-history accounts, not evidence that the film is a historical reconstruction. D23’s entry on the animated film gives those details.
What songs are in Mulan?
The animated film’s musical numbers help tell the story, from Mulan’s family’s hopes for her future to her soldiers’ training and life in camp. D23 identifies five new songs written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel:
- “Honor to Us All”
- “Reflection”
- “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”
- “A Girl Worth Fighting For”
- “True to Your Heart”
Walt Disney Records’ soundtrack listing also includes “The Mulan Suite,” alongside the songs above. It credits music by Matthew Wilder, lyrics by David Zippel, and score by Jerry Goldsmith. Lea Salonga performs Mulan’s songs, while the listed soundtrack includes Christina Aguilera’s performance of “Reflection” and “True to Your Heart,” performed by 98º and Stevie Wonder. The soundtrack listing is available from Walt Disney Records.
