Spoilers for “Lifedeath – Part 2.” X-Men ’97’s sixth episode gives Storm a striking, emotionally grounded return to her powers—but divides that payoff with Charles Xavier’s Shi’ar storyline and season-level plotting. “Spectacular filler” fits the tension: spectacular for Storm’s hard-won release, filler-like when the episode’s shifting focus makes her recovery feel less central than it deserves.

Still powerless, Storm remains with Forge as the Adversary exploits her fear and self-doubt. Her claustrophobia becomes part of the ordeal. Forge intervenes and reveals his knowledge of magic; Storm enters a cave to find a remedy for him. There, she faces the fear she has been avoiding, recovers her powers, and returns to the skies. She then learns of the attack on Genosha.
Meanwhile, Xavier is living among the Shi’ar and engaged to Empress Lilandra. Political opposition, including Deathbird’s challenge, puts his memories of Earth and the X-Men in question. A vision of the dead Gambit brings news of Genosha’s catastrophe and prompts Xavier to decide to return. In the final beat, Bolivar Trask is connected to Mr. Sinister, suggesting that the attack is part of a larger plan.

Storm’s recovery is the episode’s real spectacle
The cave sequence gives Storm’s return more meaning than a simple restoration of her abilities. Her physical confinement echoes the self-doubt that has been narrowing her sense of who she can be. The emotional turning point is not just that she can summon the weather again; it is that she stops making herself smaller to live with what she has lost. Her return to the open sky gives that choice a clear visual release.
That payoff is powerful, but the episode moves quickly through the recovery. The cave forces Storm to confront her fear, yet the sequence has to share attention with Forge’s predicament and the larger plot. Her return still lands because the fear and loss are specific to her, though a longer stretch devoted to her struggle could have made the transformation feel less compressed.

Why the episode can feel like filler
“Filler” is a judgment about focus, not a claim that nothing consequential happens. Storm’s arc shares substantial space with Xavier’s return and the aftermath of Genosha. The Xavier material develops the season’s questions about belonging, memory, and the cost of leaving one’s past behind. It also carries the news of the attack into his storyline. Those functions matter to the broader season, but they compete with Storm’s episode-defining moment rather than deepening it at every turn.
The shift from Storm’s intimate confrontation with fear to Shi’ar political conflict gives the episode breadth, but it also interrupts its emotional concentration. The Sinister reveal adds forward momentum and makes the Genosha attack part of a wider threat. As a closing hook, it works; as part of an episode centered on Storm’s recovery, it can make the hour feel like connective tissue between larger story beats.

How critics reflect the split
The available Rotten Tomatoes episode listing shows three individual critic scores, not an audience result or a robust consensus: Jeffrey Lyles of Lyles’ Movie Files gave it 9.5/10, Emmanuel Noisette of The Movie Blog gave it 8/10, and Lauren Milici of Total Film gave it 3.5/5. Lyles called it “another superb entry for a series that thrives on excellence.” Milici pinpointed the character-balance concern: “The heart of the X-Men has returned, but it overshadows a glorious — and more than deserved — moment for another beloved character.”
Together, those reactions capture the episode’s central trade-off: it can work as a strong installment in the larger series while still leaving Storm’s deserved moment short on room.

How “Lifedeath” connects to the comics
Marvel’s Storm character guide identifies Uncanny X-Men (1981) #186 as the comic “Lifedeath” story, linking it to Storm’s loss of powers and Forge’s responsibility. That is useful background for the episode’s title and premise, but it does not establish that the animated episode adapts the comic scene by scene.
For readers following that connection, Marvel’s listing for Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 12 says it collects issues #194–200 and describes a second Lifedeath story; it does not establish that the volume includes #186.

Is “Lifedeath – Part 2” worth watching?
Yes, especially for Storm’s recovery and the visual release of her return to the sky. The episode’s focus is divided, and Xavier’s material can crowd the character moment the story has earned. But Storm’s confrontation with fear provides a strong emotional center, while the Genosha news and Sinister reveal tie her personal turning point to the season’s wider grief and danger.
