Australian actor Penny Cook, best known as veterinarian Vicky Dean on A Country Practice, died on 26 December 2018, aged 61, after cancer. Her family said she died peacefully, surrounded by family. The reports announcing her death did not disclose the type of cancer.
What was reported about Penny Cook’s death?
Cook died on Wednesday night, 26 December 2018. Her family’s statement, released through her management company, said: “It is with great sorrow that her family wish to advise that the much loved Penny Cook, beloved partner, mother, daughter, sister and dear friend, died peacefully last night, of cancer, surrounded by family.” ABC News reported the statement; SBS News and the Guardian’s Australian Associated Press report also attributed the announcement to her family and agent Mark Morrissey.
Those reports identified cancer as the cause of death but did not specify a cancer type. No more specific diagnosis was given in the contemporaneous coverage.
Why was Vicky Dean her signature role?
Cook played veterinarian Vicky Dean in A Country Practice from 1981 to 1985. Vicky’s marriage to Simon Bowen, played by Grant Dodwell, became one of the series’ major storylines. The role remained closely associated with Cook long after she left the show: ABC reported that fans continued to call her Vicky. Cook described that recognition as “a badge of honour” in an interview cited by the broadcaster.

Theatre, directing and support for companies
Cook’s work extended well beyond television. Limelight reported that she appeared in more than 40 theatre productions; that total is the outlet’s reported figure. She co-founded Griffin Theatre Company and chaired Monkey Baa Theatre Company, which makes work for young audiences.
The Actors Benevolent Fund of NSW also credited Cook with helping preserve the Stables Theatre as Griffin’s home and described her as a long-standing supporter of the company. These contributions place her legacy not only in a widely remembered television role, but also in Sydney’s theatre community and the development of work for younger audiences.
