History of the Eagles is listed on Netflix in some countries, but it is not available everywhere. Netflix’s Canada catalog lists the 2013 documentary, while its Japan page says the title is unavailable there. Check your local Netflix catalog before settling in to watch.
What is History of the Eagles about?
Directed by Alison Ellwood and produced by Alex Gibney, History of the Eagles is a two-part 2013 documentary tracing the band from its formation and 1970s rise to its 1980 breakup, the members’ lives apart, and the 1994 reunion and years that followed. Universal Music Canada’s release announcement describes Part One as covering the band’s creation and rise through the breakup; Part Two follows the separation, reunion, and later recording and performances.

The film draws on archival material, concert footage, home movies, and interviews with current and former Eagles members and people from the music industry. Netflix Canada lists Glenn Frey and Don Henley among the stars, with Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Don Felder, Randy Meisner, and Bernie Leadon also in its cast listing. Netflix Canada’s title page describes it as a documentary.
Where is it available on Netflix?
Availability depends on the country. Netflix Canada lists the documentary, but Netflix Japan says it is not currently available there. An official listing in one market does not establish availability in another, so search the title in your own Netflix app or country-specific catalog.

The Canadian listing identifies it as a 2013 title, gives it a TV-MA rating, and lists offline downloads in that territory. Rating labels, advisories, and features can differ between markets. The BBFC record notes strong language and drug use and gives an approximate runtime of 188 minutes; that classification is specific to the BBFC’s record, not a universal Netflix advisory. What are the DVD and Blu-ray options?
Universal Music Canada announced DVD and Blu-ray editions, including a limited deluxe three-disc box set. That set includes Eagles Live at the Capital Centre – March 1977 and a 40-page hardback photo book. The concert includes performances of “Hotel California,” “New Kid in Town,” “Take It to the Limit,” “One of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Best of My Love,” and “Take It Easy.” The bonus concert belongs to that deluxe configuration; do not assume it is included with every DVD or Blu-ray edition. Specific editions differ in format and contents. Alfred Music describes a three-disc Blu-ray package and warns that it requires a Blu-ray player; it will not play in a standard DVD player. The National Library of New Zealand catalogs a two-DVD edition with a 3-hour-7-minute runtime and region 0 encoding. Those details apply to the listed editions, not necessarily every release. Check the packaging or seller’s exact edition information before buying.
Is streaming or a disc the better way to watch?
| Option | What to check |
|---|---|
| Netflix | Whether your country’s catalog currently lists the title; availability varies by market. |
| DVD | That you have a DVD player and that the edition includes any bonus material you want. |
| Blu-ray | That you have a Blu-ray player; a Blu-ray disc is not a substitute for a standard DVD. |
| Deluxe physical set | That the specific package includes the 1977 concert and photo book; contents vary by edition and market. |
Streaming is convenient if the title is in your local catalog. A physical edition may be preferable if you want a copy on disc or the deluxe set’s concert footage, but verify the format and contents of the exact release.

What the 2013 release announcement says about the Eagles
Universal Music Canada’s 2013 announcement said the Eagles had sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and that Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 had sold more than 29 million units, which it characterized at the time as the best-selling album of all time. The same announcement reported five No. 1 U.S. singles and six Grammy Awards. These are figures and a ranking attributed to the distributor’s 2013 statement, not current totals or independently updated measurements.
