Filmmaker Archie Snowden won the Long Island Filmmaker Award for The Long Island Underground Legends of Hip-Hop, his directorial debut, at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame’s (LIMEHOF) 2026 Music Documentary Film Festival. The documentary spotlights underground DJs, MCs and crews from Nassau and Suffolk counties, telling the regional stories Snowden says are often missing from wider accounts of hip-hop.
What the documentary is about
The Long Island Underground Legends of Hip-Hop focuses on pioneers and underground performers from Long Island’s early hip-hop scene. The film includes JVC FORCE, the Central Islip group behind “Strong Island,” as well as MC Glamorous and other DJs, MCs and crews from Nassau and Suffolk counties. Patch reported on the film and Snowden’s account of its origins on October 6, 2026.

Snowden has said he wanted to document grassroots performers and neighborhood scenes, rather than revisit only widely recognized artists such as Rakim, Public Enemy and Biz Markie. “We had a whole culture and a movement on Long Island that is only visible to people who live there, and that’s where the documentary came from,” he told Patch.
Why Archie Snowden made it
Snowden’s project grew out of his own connection to Long Island hip-hop. He was born in Copiague, lived in Brentwood and later settled with his family in Central Islip, where he graduated from high school. As a teenager, he performed as MC Amazin’ A after his cousin, a neighborhood DJ, needed someone to take the microphone.

Snowden recalled DJs bringing their equipment out of nightclubs and into streets, parks and backyards in the late 1970s. After hip-hop’s 50th-anniversary celebrations in 2023, he first planned short social-media features on overlooked Long Island artists. He then saw how their connected stories could form a feature-length documentary.
The festival’s program described the film as challenging accounts of hip-hop that focus mainly on New York City’s five boroughs and honoring pioneers overlooked in early rap history. That is the film’s and festival’s framing; the available reporting does not establish it as a settled conclusion about the full history of hip-hop.
The award and the 2026 LIMEHOF festival
Snowden received the Long Island Filmmaker Award, one of 14 awards presented at LIMEHOF’s second annual Music Documentary Film Festival. The three-day festival took place September 25–27, 2026, in Stony Brook Village and screened 42 short and feature-length music documentaries, according to LongIsland.com’s September 30 festival wrap-up.
The event included 16 Long Island premieres and three world premieres, along with Q&A panels and live performances. Snowden’s recognition followed a sold-out screening and a hip-hop performance featuring artists who appear in his film. Patch reported that the festival’s films represented the United States and 14 other countries.

The festival’s executive director, Tom Needham, said the documentaries showed how music can bring people together, build community and give artists a means of expression.
