Unmasking the Tylenol Killer is scheduled to stream free on The Roku Channel starting October 9, 2026. The film revisits whether Mathew Francis Betkouski, identified in 2026 as an unidentified man found dead in Boise in 1982, could be connected to the Chicago-area Tylenol murders. Idaho authorities have described a possible connection, not named Betkouski as a suspect, and have not publicly established that he committed the killings.
When and where to watch Unmasking the Tylenol Killer
As of October 7, 2026, the documentary’s announced release date is October 9 on The Roku Channel, where it is described as streaming free. BroadwayWorld’s September 2026 announcement lists a runtime of 88 minutes and identifies Terry Dunn Meurer as the director. The announcement promotes the film’s thesis and contents; the documentary had not premiered by October 7, so its presentation and any newly disclosed evidence cannot yet be assessed here. A Roku streaming device is not the only possible way to access a streaming service; check The Roku Channel’s availability on the device or platform you use.
What happened in the Idaho cold case?
In December 1982, an unidentified man was found dead in a Boise church. Decades later, investigators reopened the case and identified him as Mathew Francis Betkouski. According to reporting by CBS News Chicago, they traced an unusual key to Jacksonville, Florida, reviewed property records, contacted a surviving relative, and compared DNA. The identification resolved who the Boise man was; it did not establish a connection to the Tylenol murders.
Why investigators considered a possible connection
The Chicago-area poisonings killed seven people in 1982 after they took cyanide-laced capsules. No one has been charged with those murders. Investigators examining Betkouski’s history described several details that prompted them to look at a possible link:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- He had an interest in chemistry and poison. Former colleagues recalled discussions about committing a “perfect crime.”
- His family preserved a bottle reported to contain sodium cyanide, along with photos and writings related to Chicago.
- Investigators believed the photos of the area dated to December 1981, not the week the poisonings occurred.
These details vary in evidentiary weight: the bottle and photographs are physical items, while the “perfect crime” account is a recollection by former colleagues. Their existence does not by itself show that Betkouski poisoned the capsules.
What the public record does not establish
Two significant gaps limit the proposed connection. First, the bottle was reported to contain sodium cyanide, while the capsules used in the Tylenol poisonings contained potassium cyanide. Second, investigators could not place Betkouski in Chicago during the final week of September 1982, when the poisonings occurred. The reported photos were believed to be from December 1981, not that poisoning period.

Ada County Sheriff’s Office detective Tim Cooper told CBS News Chicago: “While our office may have identified some connection to 1982 events, we’re not naming him as a suspect.” The distinction is important: investigators said they saw a possible connection to events in 1982, not that Betkouski was a suspect in the Tylenol killings.
The FBI’s Chicago office, as quoted by CBS News Chicago, said: “There have been repeated claims over the past 44 years about alleged links to the Tylenol Murders which have remain unsubstantiated.” The office continued: “Out of respect for the ongoing, legitimate investigation, those impacted by the tragedy, and the law enforcement partners who have provided genuine support since the start, the FBI remains the lead on investigating and releasing credible information to the public once the evidence yields a true case resolution.” The investigation remains open.

How this differs from the James Lewis case
James Lewis was long considered a prime suspect and served more than 12 years in prison for an extortion note demanding money to stop the killings. He was never charged with the murders and denied involvement. His suspicion and extortion conviction are not proof that he committed the poisonings, just as the details found in Betkouski’s history do not establish his guilt.

- Is a claim grounded in a physical item, an attributed witness recollection, or an inference?
- Does any evidence place Betkouski in the Chicago area during the poisoning week?
- Is there chemical or forensic evidence matching the potassium cyanide used in the attacks?
- Do authorities describe a link as established, possible, or unsubstantiated?
Those distinctions matter because the identification of Betkouski is established, while his involvement in the Tylenol murders has not been publicly established.
