Felipe Bustos Sierra’s Everybody to Kenmure Street turns a dawn immigration raid in Glasgow into an absorbing portrait of neighbors making a collective stand. Its account of the 2021 protest is energising without losing sight of the people and history behind it.
What is Everybody to Kenmure Street about?
On the morning of 13 May 2021, a Home Office immigration enforcement van arrived on Kenmure Street in Pollokshields, a diverse neighborhood in Glasgow. Two residents were detained. Neighbors, activists, students and others gathered around the van, eventually preventing it from leaving.
Directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra, the documentary follows that day as a small gathering grows into a much larger crowd. Interviews with people who were there sit alongside footage shot throughout the day, giving the film both firsthand testimony and the unfolding texture of the protest. Sight and Sound describes the confrontation as an eight-hour stand-off.
Does the film make a persuasive case for people power?
Yes. The film’s strongest argument is embodied in the crowd’s persistence: ordinary people decide that the raid concerns them, then remain present together. The result is a rousing account of collective action, but its emphasis is not simply on a dramatic intervention or a single outcome. It attends to the community whose response made the day matter.

That response has been praised in similarly direct terms. The Herald called it “a film that will have you punching the air,” in an excerpt reproduced on Conic Films’ official page. The Guardian excerpt on that page calls it “a morale boosting film”; Variety describes it as “Incredibly energising.” Those endorsements match the film’s stirring quality, though the documentary’s value lies as much in its attention to testimony and context as in its capacity to exhilarate.
How does it connect the protest to Glasgow’s past?
The documentary places Kenmure Street within a longer story of local resistance rather than treating the gathering as an isolated burst of solidarity. Sight and Sound notes that the film brings in historical material about the area and its connections to slavery and industrial wealth. That framing widens the question from what a crowd did on one day to whose histories shape a place, and who gets to tell its story.

The broader historical argument is part of the film’s perspective, not a substitute for the immediate account of the raid. The balance between those scales—one street on one morning and a city’s deeper history—is a central source of its ambition.
What are the performances and tone like?
Interviews and footage recorded throughout the day provide the documented foundation. The available descriptions do not establish every formal device used in the film, so it is better to approach it as a documentary built around testimony and contemporaneous footage than to assume a particular style of reconstruction or reenactment. Emma Thompson provides the voice of the anonymous “Van Man,” according to The Guardian; Screen Scotland lists Thompson as an executive producer.

When was it released, and how long is it?
Conic Films identifies the production as a UK 2025 film. Its Sundance premiere and UK-and-Ireland theatrical release took place in 2026: Screen Scotland gives 13 March 2026 as the cinema opening date and reports that it won the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance. Conic lists a 98-minute runtime; the BBFC gives an approximate runtime of 99 minutes.
