Safe for the Whole Family: How to Make a Christian Superstar examines what happened when Contemporary Christian Music’s commercial machinery and conservative evangelical expectations collided with the lives of artists who did not fit its preferred image. In a review published October 5, 2026, Allison McClain Merrill describes the film as a case study centered on Jennifer Knapp, Nikki Leonti, and Michael Passons—not a comprehensive history of CCM.
What the documentary is about
According to Merrill’s October 5, 2026, account, Jason Ikeler’s Safe for the Whole Family: How to Make a Christian Superstar premiered September 27 at the Nashville Film Festival. The film combines CCM history and commentary with accounts from artists who revisited their success in the Christian music industry and painful experiences leaving evangelical spaces. Authors and scholars Leah Payne, Jane Hong, and Kristin Kobes du Mez contribute to the documentary.
The film reportedly opens with a projection of Matthew 21:12–13, including the passage about turning a house of prayer into “a den of robbers.” Merrill also quotes former Caedmon’s Call member Derek Webb: “The word Christian, when applied to anything other than a human being, is a marketing term.” Both details are reported by Merrill as elements of the film; they are not independently verified here against a transcript.
How the film frames the CCM business
Merrill presents CCM as a Christian-market counterpart to mainstream popular music, where artists could be positioned as faith-based alternatives to secular acts. The review compares Trin-i-tee 5:7 with Destiny’s Child and TLC, Relient K with Blink-182, and Plus One with the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. In this framing, religious branding and commercial incentives worked alongside conservative evangelical norms to define which artists were acceptable.

The article says CCM was “nearly a $1 billion-per-year recording industry” at its peak, but does not specify when that peak occurred or identify the original source of the estimate. It is therefore best understood as Merrill’s reported characterization, not a fully documented industry statistic.
The documentary’s argument, as Merrill describes it, is less a complete history of the genre than a case study in what could happen to artists who fell outside the industry’s mold. That distinction matters: three artists’ accounts can illuminate a system and its pressures, but they do not stand in for every musician’s experience or every strand of CCM.

Whose experiences are at the center
Jennifer Knapp and the cost of purity messaging
Merrill recounts Knapp’s breakthrough with “Undo Me” and her success in the Christian music market. The review says Knapp later became uncomfortable with the industry’s sexual-purity messaging. Knapp reportedly recalled a fan thanking her for saving them “from a life of homosexuality.” Looking back, she wished she could have answered, “Run. Get out as fast as you can,” or, “You’re okay gay.” The episode, as reported, shows how a song’s meaning and its place in a market can affect listeners in ways an artist may later regret.
Merrill says Knapp left the industry, earned a master’s degree in theological studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School in 2018, and rerecorded her debut album Kansas in 2024.

Nikki Leonti, family pressure, and ostracism
The review reports that Leonti’s “Everlasting Place” reached the top of CCM’s Adult Contemporary chart. Merrill describes Leonti’s account of family pressure to pursue Christian music, an allegedly coercive sexual relationship when she was 17, and subsequent ostracism after sex and pregnancy. These are sensitive personal allegations attributed to Leonti as recounted in the film and review; they should not be treated as independently adjudicated facts.
Michael Passons and exclusion from Avalon
According to Merrill, Passons was a member of Avalon and was removed from the group after other members confronted him at home and acted on rumors that he was gay. The review reports that he experienced PTSD after leaving. This account and its reported impact are presented as Passons’s experience as conveyed by the film and article, not as independently verified findings.

What the film leaves out
Merrill’s principal criticism is that the documentary gives limited attention to Black musicians who helped shape CCM and modern gospel. Chanel Haynes is another voice in the film, but the review argues that artists such as Andraé Crouch, Kirk Franklin, Lecrae, and Mandisa deserved more consideration. That critique points to a limit in the film’s scope: its focused stories may reveal real pressures while still leaving important contributors and histories at the margins.

Merrill also reports that Passons collaborated with Ty Herndon and Melissa Greene on a rerecording of “Testify to Love” in May and planned a solo single, “Not Broken,” for fall 2026. Those release details are time-sensitive and reflect what the article stated in October 2026.
