Its project website says more than 25 former Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) members are expected to share accounts of their work, within the limits of what they can legally disclose.
What is The Service about?
The Service is a documentary series project focused on Canadian intelligence and the people involved in it. The project says it aims to make intelligence work and operations more understandable to a general audience, drawing on former CSIS members’ accounts of missions and experiences that are not generally public. The project describes its premise and current development status on its website.
The website says more than 25 former CSIS members are expected to participate. That is the project’s stated count, not an independently verified tally. Any accounts will be bounded by law: the project does not suggest that participants can freely disclose classified information.
Who is making the series?
Matthew A. MacDonald
The project identifies Matthew A. MacDonald as creator, producer, and director. His biography describes him as an Ottawa-based writer, producer, director, cinematographer, public speaker, and political scientist. The project also describes an advisory team that includes former intelligence officers, analysts, and other experts, some of whom have agreed to appear. Details are available on the team page.

Buck Productions
In a creator update, MacDonald said he had been working with Buck Productions since February 2026 to further develop and pitch the series to major broadcasters and streaming services. That is evidence of development and pitching—not a confirmed sale, commission, or distribution deal. The update is available on the project’s LinkedIn page.
Is The Service in production?
As of October 5, 2026, the project website describes the series as in development. MacDonald’s update says the full series had not yet been made. The available information therefore supports describing it as a project being developed and pitched, not as a commissioned or completed series.

The project’s website calls The Service “Canada’s First Intelligence Documentary Series.” That is the project’s own promotional framing; it should not be read as an independently established historical claim.
