PBS and GBH’s NOVA have announced Ghost Ship Mystery, a one-hour documentary produced by Blink Films about archaeologists investigating a ship graveyard exposed on Ukraine’s Dnipro River. C21Media reports that the program is intended to air in 2027, but no exact premiere date or title-specific streaming listing has been announced in the reports available.
What is Ghost Ship Mystery about?
The documentary follows an international team of archaeologists working on Khortytsia Island, where a shoreline became exposed after the Kakhovka reservoir emptied in 2023. Televisual reported that the area had been nearly 20 feet underwater until June 2023 and lies about 100 miles downstream from the Kakhovka Dam. Those measurements and the account of the site come from the trade announcement coverage, rather than an independent archaeological study.
The film links the investigation to a Russian military flotilla sent in 1737 toward a warm-water port in what is now southern Ukraine. The announcement says the documentary will examine how the ships were built, what life was like for the soldiers, and why the force fled and abandoned its fleet. This is the program’s reported historical premise; the coverage does not independently establish the underlying history or archaeological interpretation.
When will the NOVA special air?
C21Media reported an intended broadcast year of 2027 for PBS, ARTE, and SBS in Australia. That is a planned window, not a confirmed premiere date or a current schedule listing. The reports do not give an episode date, local station time, or confirmed final runtime beyond describing the film as one hour (also listed as 1×60′).

Where can you watch it?
PBS and ARTE are announced broadcast partners, and C21Media reports a pre-sale to Australia’s SBS. No title-specific streaming availability has been confirmed. PBS’s NOVA page directs viewers to the series website for full-length documentaries, while a 2020 PBS announcement said the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel included NOVA films. Neither source confirms that Ghost Ship Mystery will be available on a particular streaming service. Check official NOVA, PBS, ARTE, and SBS listings closer to the reported broadcast window.
Who is making the documentary?
Televisual reports that Ben Holgate filmed, produced, and directed the documentary. Blink Films executive producers are Tom Adams and Dan Chambers; NOVA executive producers are Julia Cort and Chris Schmidt. PBS Distribution is named as the global distribution partner, and the program was to be presented to international buyers at MIPCOM 2026.

Chris Schmidt described NOVA’s archaeology films as “detective stories – where scientists unearth clues that tell a story about the past.” Dan Chambers said the program would feature new discoveries, forensic analysis, and experiments amid the war in Ukraine. These are comments by production executives, not independent assessments of the film or its archaeological evidence.
