Marc Beckman, an adviser to Melania Trump and a producer of MELANIA, claimed on October 6, 2026, that the documentary’s opening-weekend per-theater average was about 67% higher than Tom Cruise’s Digger. The comparison is about average gross per theater—not total box-office revenue or profitability—and the reports carrying Beckman’s claim do not establish the underlying calculation.
What did Melania Trump’s aide say?
Beckman said MELANIA outperformed Digger by approximately 67% on a per-theater basis during their respective opening weekends. He added that Digger played in 1,543 more theaters. The Daily Beast and Mediaite both reported the statement on October 6, 2026; The Daily Beast quoted Beckman as saying, “On a per-theater basis, MELANIA outperformed Tom Cruise’s DIGGER by approximately 67%, despite opening in roughly half as many theaters,” then noting the theater-count difference. The Daily Beast and Mediaite attributed the claim to Beckman.
What does “per-theater” performance mean?
A per-theater average divides a film’s gross over a specified period by the number of theaters showing it in that period. It can indicate how much revenue each theater generated on average, but it is not the same as the film’s total gross. A title playing in fewer theaters can post a higher average while earning less overall.
The approximately 67% figure remains Beckman’s reported comparison, not an independently verified finding: the reports do not identify the underlying box-office dataset or explain the calculation. The claimed theater-count gap—1,543 more theaters for Digger—is likewise attributed to Beckman.

How do the reported box-office figures compare?
Mediaite reported the following figures, which cover different measures and periods:
| Film or item | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Digger | $8 million domestic; $20 million worldwide | Opening-weekend gross, as reported by Mediaite. |
| MELANIA | $16.7 million | Estimated theatrical-run gross, as reported by Mediaite. |
| MELANIA production and marketing | $40 million paid for the documentary and another $35 million spent on marketing | Amounts Mediaite reported Amazon paid and spent; they are not presented here as audited costs. |
These figures do not provide a like-for-like comparison: Digger’s numbers are opening-weekend receipts, including separate domestic and worldwide totals, while MELANIA’s figure is an estimated total for its theatrical run. They should not be treated as if they cover the same time window or geography.

Does the claim show that MELANIA was more successful?
No single conclusion about overall success follows from a per-theater average. The reported 67% comparison does not establish which film earned more in total, reached more viewers, or made a profit. Gross receipts alone also do not show what a distributor retained after theater splits or account for all costs. Mediaite’s reported payment and marketing figures are not an audited profit-and-loss calculation.
