Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a newly announced, single-player action RPG led by Casey Hudson, director of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games describe it as a spiritual successor to KOTOR—but Lucasfilm says it is not a direct sequel or continuation. The game is in early development for PC and consoles, with no release window announced.
What was announced at The Game Awards?
A teaser at The Game Awards 2025 introduced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG being developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The official description places the story at the end of the Old Republic and casts the player as a Force user. Arcanaut Studios’ announcement and Lucasfilm’s StarWars.com interview establish those details.

Is Fate of the Old Republic a KOTOR sequel?
No—not in the sense of a direct story continuation. Arcanaut calls the game a spiritual successor to KOTOR, while Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games’ VP and GM, says, “Although Fate of the Old Republic is not a direct sequel or continuation.” StarWars.com reports that the game will feature new characters and an all-new story.
That distinction leaves room for a shared creative lineage and a familiar role-playing sensibility without confirming returning characters or a plot link. Casey Hudson, who directed the original KOTOR, described the project as “a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since.”

Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games
Arcanaut Studios is developing the game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Arcanaut says it was founded in July 2025 and is a Canadian studio. This announcement is the studio’s first project reveal.
Casey Hudson leads the project
Hudson is the game director. His previous credits include directing the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. His involvement explains the spiritual-successor framing, but it does not establish that the new game will reuse KOTOR characters, systems, or storylines.

Arcanaut says Fate of the Old Republic is in early development for PC and consoles. The announcement does not name a release date or window, nor does it provide a final list of console platforms. Hudson cautioned on StarWars.com, “We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead.” A teaser reveal is not evidence of when the game will ship.
