Mullally became the first woman to hold the office in its more than 1,400-year history. William represented the King and Royal Family; the Princess accompanied him.
Why Sarah Mullally’s installation was historic
Mullally became the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to hold the office. The Church of England describes the installation as the symbolic beginning of her public ministry. She had legally become Archbishop in January, at the Confirmation of Election; the March ceremony was the later welcome into the See and the start of her public ministry.
The Church of England’s account of the installation explains the distinction between the January confirmation and the cathedral service. The Prince of Wales attended on behalf of the King and Royal Family, accompanied by the Princess of Wales.
What happened during the Canterbury service
The ceremony took place on the Feast of the Annunciation and combined a welcome to the new Archbishop with longstanding Canterbury traditions. Mullally arrived at the cathedral’s West Door and took her seat in the Quire Cathedra, including the ancient chair of St Augustine.

According to the Cathedral’s description of the service, St Augustine, identified as the first Archbishop of Canterbury, arrived in Kent in 597 AD and founded what is now Canterbury Cathedral. The chair and the West Door connect the new Archbishop’s public ministry with that long institutional history.
