On March 30, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly asked users to ease up on generating images. It was an appeal during a demand spike, not a new product rule or a formal shutdown announcement.
What sparked the Ghibli image trend?
OpenAI announced image generation in ChatGPT on March 25, 2025. The company described GPT-4o as able to create images, transform uploaded pictures, follow detailed instructions and revise results through conversation. Users soon began sharing images inspired by Studio Ghibli’s distinctive animation aesthetic, including versions based on personal photographs.

At launch, OpenAI said the feature was rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team and Free users, with Enterprise and Edu access to follow. It said an image could take up to a minute to generate. Those were launch-era statements, not confirmation of current access, usage limits or speed. OpenAI’s announcement also distinguished native GPT-4o image generation from the earlier DALL·E GPT path. Why did Sam Altman ask people to slow down?
The rapid volume of image requests created temporary service pressure. Reuters reporting, republished by Aaj English TV, said OpenAI temporarily limited image generation amid the surge. On March 30, Altman posted a request for users to “chill” on image generation, adding that the team needed sleep. In a follow-up reproduced by TechJuice, he said the company had not caught up since launch and described the demand as unprecedented in his experience. The request should be understood in that context: a public plea as the company worked to keep the service running, rather than evidence that users had violated a rule. The coverage describes temporary limits, not a permanent removal of the feature.
What did the reported growth figures show?
Contemporaneous figures indicate that the image trend coincided with a marked burst of activity. Reuters relayed measurements from several sources, each covering a different metric:

How did GPT-4o image generation differ from the earlier DALL·E route?
OpenAI presented the March 2025 release as image generation built into GPT-4o, its multimodal model, rather than only the earlier DALL·E GPT experience. The announced workflow included generating images, editing uploaded images, responding to detailed directions and making refinements in the conversation. OpenAI said generated images would include C2PA metadata identifying them as coming from GPT-4o, and described safeguards including moderation. These are claims in the company’s launch announcement, not an independent guarantee that every image will be identified or that every safeguard will work in every case. OpenAI’s launch announcement

Is making Ghibli-inspired AI art illegal?
There is no simple legal answer established by the reporting. Reuters quoted attorney Evan Brown, a partner at Neal & McDevitt, explaining that copyright generally protects specific expression rather than an artistic style. Brown described the legal landscape as uncertain; that view is not a court ruling, and it does not determine the legality of a particular prompt or image.
A style reference and copying a specific protected image are not identical questions. The cited coverage does not resolve how any particular output, training material, or use would be treated. Nor does the availability of an image-generation tool itself grant rights to source works or settle whether a particular result is lawful or ethically acceptable. What happens to an uploaded photo?
OpenAI’s Terms of Use address user content and say users can opt out of model training through the controls described by the company. The terms can change, so check the current wording and account settings before uploading personal material. The training opt-out question is separate from copyright ownership and does not, by itself, settle how a specific upload or resulting image should be treated. OpenAI also warns in its terms that model output may be inaccurate. OpenAI Terms of Use
