Indoor Safari is an energetic, band-led record that puts Nick Lowe’s economical songwriting in the company of Los Straitjackets’ guitar-driven roots-rock and surf-rock sound. Its appeal lies in that contrast: Lowe’s dry, concise songs meet a lively ensemble feel, with playful material and familiar songs reshaped for the group.
Is Indoor Safari any good?
Yes, if you want Nick Lowe’s sharp, unforced songwriting with more twang and motion than a restrained solo setting might suggest. The album feels built around a working band rather than a singer with decorative backing: Los Straitjackets give the songs a clear instrumental identity, while Lowe keeps the writing direct and wry.

That liveliness is a critical judgment, not a measured consensus. In his September 15, 2024 review for Louder, David Quantick describes the collection as unusually bouncy and eclectic, and hears it as livelier than Lowe’s recent work. The record’s energy is the strongest reason to hear it, though listeners looking chiefly for a hushed, reflective Lowe album may prefer his mellower side.
What does the album sound like?
The sound is rooted in rock ’n’ roll, with surf-guitar color and a buoyant, roots-rock pulse. Lowe’s concise approach remains the center of gravity: songs don’t need elaborate turns to establish a character. The band supplies the motion around that economy, giving the album a more kinetic profile than a solo-focused presentation.

“Went to a Party” is a useful point of entry. Its party setting and wry narrative make the record’s playful streak easy to grasp. Quantick singles it out as a twang-boogie highlight; that description is his assessment, while the broader point is that the song brings Lowe’s understated humor into a guitar-led setting.
The sequence draws on new material as well as reworkings and covers. Quantick specifically identifies “A Quiet Place” and “Raincoat in the River” among the covers and reworkings, helping explain why the album’s personality comes from both Lowe’s songwriting and the group’s reinterpretive approach.

How did the songs become a cohesive album?
Lowe said the songs developed through live performance, where the musicians could learn the material and respond to one another. As he put it, “After playing them in front of an audience a dozen times, the players know what they’re doing and they start listening to everybody else, and adjusting their thing accordingly. And suddenly, hey, presto, you’ve got the sauce on it all!”
That process matters to the album’s band-first character. Lowe also said the recordings were made across five years, yet the final sequence sounds unified to him: “When you hear the songs all together, it sounds of a piece, and you can’t tell that it was all recorded over a period of five years.” These are Lowe’s descriptions of how the record came together, rather than a claim that every listener will hear the same degree of cohesion.
