How JJ dies in the Season 4 finale

Groff threatens Kiara and demands the treasure. JJ hands it over to protect her. The exchange is not a failed attempt to bargain for the crown: JJ chooses Kiara’s safety over the treasure, and Groff kills him after taking it.
Why Groff stabs him anyway
In an interview with Netflix Tudum, co-creator Shannon Burke said Groff had no need to kill JJ once he had the crown and described the stabbing as spite. Co-creator Josh Pate characterized Groff as a mask-wearing, sociopathic character; that is the creators’ description of a fictional villain, not a clinical diagnosis. Read the creators’ account of the finale.

Was Groff JJ’s biological father?
Yes. Earlier in the season, JJ learns that Luke, the man who raised him, is not his biological father. The “Albatross” clue leads to the truth that Larissa Genrette was JJ’s birth mother, and that Chandler Groff was his biological father. Netflix’s Season 4 recap also recounts that Groff killed Larissa.
That revelation makes the final betrayal especially cruel: JJ is killed by the parent he had hoped might become family. But the immediate reason for his death is clear—Groff kills him after JJ gives up the crown to protect Kiara.

What JJ’s choice says about him—and what happens next
JJ’s sacrifice follows the loyalty that has defined his place in the group. In a Netflix Tudum interview published November 8, 2024, actor Rudy Pankow said, “From the get-go, JJ always showed that he would do anything,” and that he “would put his friends before himself.” Pankow also said JJ lived fully and did not regret taking risks. Those comments describe the actor’s understanding of the character, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the ending satisfying. Read the interview with Pankow and the creators.
After JJ’s death, the Pogues grieve and bury him in Morocco. Rafe tells them Groff has a buyer in Lisbon, and John B says they should do what JJ would do: get even. The finale shifts the group’s immediate purpose from chasing treasure to seeking revenge.
Rank #3
Pate said the next season was planned as “a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent.” That frames JJ’s death as a turning point for the group, rather than simply an obstacle in the treasure hunt. Netflix Tudum’s interview also discusses the intended emotional role of the loss.

No. Season 5 does not bring JJ back to life. Its finale uses Kiara’s interaction with the Blue Crown to prompt memories of JJ and mark a step in her mourning. Burke said the intention was that JJ would not return in bodily form. These are later-season developments, separate from the Season 4 finale.
Season 5 also resolves Groff’s story: Kiara confronts and kills him during the hurricane. The Pogues eventually recover the Royal Merchant gold and honor JJ with a memorial bench; Sarah and John B name their newborn JJ. Netflix Tudum’s Season 5 ending recap covers those later events.
