Best UK Streaming Services in 2026: Compare Plans and Find the Right Mix

There is no universal best UK streaming service. Compare paid plans with BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 Streaming, then choose for the content, features and total spend that fit your household.

There is no single best UK streaming service for every household. Choose by the programmes, films or sport you actually watch, then compare the full plan: ads, picture quality, streams, downloads and cancellation terms. Free broadcaster apps belong in the comparison too, though BBC iPlayer and live-TV viewing can bring TV Licence requirements.

Which streaming service is best in the UK?

For a household choosing where to spend, the best option is the service that supplies the content it wants at a price and plan it can live with. A broad catalogue, a particular franchise, Sky programming or live sport point to different choices; no overall ranking can settle that for everyone.

Ofcom’s 2026 annual media report found that 26% of UK viewers first turn to Netflix when looking for something to watch, compared with 25% who first turn to the BBC and 15% to ITV. It also reported a 9% year-on-year rise in broadcaster-owned on-demand viewing, and that 70% of people watched traditional broadcaster content for at least 15 minutes in an average week in 2025. Those figures show why subscription services and broadcaster players both merit consideration; they do not tell an individual household what to buy. Ofcom’s 2026 media report

Service May suit What to weigh
Netflix Households seeking a broad entertainment catalogue and originals Plan tiers differ in ads, picture quality and other features. Confirm current prices, simultaneous streams, downloads and cancellation terms with Netflix.
Amazon Prime Video Viewers who want a broad catalogue, or who value Prime benefits alongside video Prime Video can be bought alone or with Prime benefits; compare the membership you actually need, and check the plan’s ads and included content.
Disney+ Families and viewers drawn to Disney-owned franchises Standard with Ads, Standard and Premium have different prices and features. Check the current plan details and catalogue for your household.
Apple TV+ Viewers interested in Apple TV+ originals Compare its current monthly or annual offer with how often you watch its catalogue; do not assume it has the same breadth as larger multi-studio services.
NOW Viewers seeking Sky programming, live channels, cinema or sport through relevant memberships Entertainment, Cinema and sports memberships are distinct. Boost and Ultra Boost are optional add-ons with content and device eligibility limits; live sports and channels retain ads.
discovery+ Viewers interested in discovery+ content and, where available, TNT Sports Check which content and sport are included in the plan offered to you, alongside current price and viewing features.
BBC iPlayer Viewers who want BBC programmes on demand It is a broadcaster player rather than a paid subscription service; a TV Licence is required to watch BBC programmes on iPlayer.
ITVX Viewers who want ITV programmes on demand Check the current free and paid options, advertising and programme availability.
Channel 4 Streaming Viewers who want Channel 4 programmes on demand Check current account, advertising and programme conditions directly with Channel 4.

A 2026 Selectra comparison characterises Netflix and Prime Video as broad catalogues, Disney+ as a family and franchise option, Apple TV+ as focused on originals, NOW as centred on Sky content, and discovery+ around TNT Sports. Treat these as useful starting points rather than objective rankings: your own viewing habits and the current plan terms matter more. Selectra’s 2026 comparison

What streaming services are worth paying for?

Start with the shows, films and sport your household watches, not the number of titles advertised. A service is worth paying for when its included catalogue or live offering is something you use enough to justify its full plan cost. If a title is available on a free broadcaster service, a separate subscription may not be necessary for that viewing.

Compare the plan, not just its headline price

  • Ads: Check whether ads are included, whether an ad-free option costs extra, and whether live channels or sport still carry ads.
  • Picture and sound: Confirm the resolution and audio features included in the plan, plus whether your television and device support them.
  • Household viewing: Compare simultaneous streams and download limits against how many people watch at once and whether anyone needs offline viewing.
  • Terms: Check whether the payment is monthly or annual, how cancellation works, and whether a promotion renews at a different price.
  • Bundles: Ofcom notes that Netflix is offered through Sky and Virgin Media pay-TV bundles and that Disney+ is available with some O2 mobile packages. Check eligibility and the bundle’s total cost against buying services separately. Ofcom’s pricing and consumer engagement report

Prices are particularly easy to miscompare because dated snapshots can differ from today’s checkout. Ofcom’s report records selected UK prices for September 2025, while a Selectra comparison marked verified on 19 May 2026 gives a later secondary snapshot. Neither establishes what a household will be charged in October 2026: verify current prices, offers and renewal terms directly with each provider.

Can free UK streaming apps replace a subscription?

They can cover some households’ viewing, particularly if their priorities are BBC, ITV or Channel 4 programmes rather than a paid service’s catalogue, originals or sport. Ofcom’s viewing figures support including broadcaster players in a comparison, but the services are not interchangeable: each has its own programming, availability and conditions.

BBC iPlayer requires a TV Licence to watch BBC programmes on demand. Watching live television can also trigger a TV Licence requirement. Check the official TV Licensing guidance for the current rules that apply to your viewing; the cited evidence here does not establish the exact legal wording or current fee.

Does your TV or streaming device support the service?

Streaming apps are available across smart TVs, streaming platforms and game consoles, but support varies by service and exact device model. Apple says its TV app is available on Apple devices, streaming platforms, smart TVs and game consoles, and lists services including Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and NOW inside the app. That ecosystem list is not proof that every named service works on every device. Apple TV app in the UK

Before buying a streaming player or relying on an older television, check the service’s supported-device list for the exact model and confirm that essential features, such as 4K playback or downloads, are supported. NOW also makes some picture and audio features conditional on eligible content and devices.

How to choose a practical streaming mix

  1. List what you actually watch. Separate must-have series, films, broadcaster programmes and live sport from things you might watch occasionally.
  2. Check free players first. See whether BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 Streaming has the programmes you want, and account for the TV Licence rules applicable to your viewing.
  3. Choose paid services by a specific need. Match a service to the catalogue, franchise, originals, Sky programming or sport your household wants rather than subscribing to several by default.
  4. Compare complete plan terms. Check current price, ads, quality, streams, downloads, billing period, cancellation and any bundle or renewal conditions.
  5. Confirm device compatibility. Check the precise TV or player model with each provider before committing to hardware or a plan.
  6. Review the total household spend. Add the subscriptions and memberships together, then reconsider services the household no longer uses.
