The spangram is GENERICTERM. The five theme words are:
- ASPIRIN
- DUMPSTER
- ESCALATOR
- THERMOS
- ZIPPER
One answer listing prints the spangram as “GENERICTERMS,” but the WordFinder archive and other listings give the 11-letter form GENERICTERM. What the theme clue means
The puzzle groups words associated with brand names that came to be used as common names for product categories. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) explains that generic wording names the goods or services themselves, rather than identifying a particular commercial source. Its guidance on disclaimer requirements uses ASPIRIN as an example.
The USPTO’s Basic Facts About Trademarks guide says: “Trademarks that eventually became generic because of long-term widespread, non-trademark use: ESCALATOR for ‘moving staircases,’ ASPIRIN for ‘pain relief medication’.” This explains why those two words fit the theme. The puzzle’s grouping, however, is not a legal determination of the status of every answer.

Why the puzzle is not a legal ruling on every word
In U.S. trademark law, genericness is evaluated in relation to particular goods or services and the relevant public. The USPTO’s Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure, §1209.01(c)(i), states: “A mark is generic if its primary significance to the relevant public is the class or category of goods or services on or in connection with which it is used.”
That standard is narrower than simply asking whether a word is widely used. Legal status can depend on the goods or services and jurisdiction; the puzzle does not establish the present trademark status of all five terms everywhere.
