He said the child’s parents were working toward a relationship in her best interests and that he and Jill Biden wanted what was best for all their grandchildren, including Navy. The statement came weeks after Hunter Biden and Roberts reached a child-support settlement in Arkansas.
What did President Biden say about Navy?
In a statement first provided to People and reported by The Washington Post on July 28, 2023, Biden said: “Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward.”
He added: “This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter. Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.” Biden’s remarks acknowledged Navy publicly and emphasized both her privacy and her place among his grandchildren.
Who are Navy Joan Roberts and her mother?
Navy Joan Roberts is the daughter of Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts. She was four when Biden made his July 2023 statement; that age describes her at the time, not her age today. Courthouse News Service reported in November 2019 that Roberts had filed a paternity claim in May of that year, that the child was born in August 2018, and that a DNA test confirmed Hunter Biden’s paternity.

How the Arkansas child-support case led to the statement
The public acknowledgment followed a June 2023 settlement of the child-support dispute. The Washington Post reported on June 29, 2023 that Hunter had been paying $20,000 per month before the settlement. The agreement was expected to lower the payment, but that report did not state the new amount.
The agreement also allowed Navy to select some of Hunter Biden’s paintings. They could be sent to her or to a gallery designated by Roberts, with sale proceeds directed to an account she designated. Roberts agreed to drop her request to change the child’s surname.

The Washington Post’s July 2023 report said it was not known whether Biden had ever met Navy in Arkansas at that time. It also cited an unnamed person familiar with the family who said Biden had refrained from commenting while the case was ongoing and that the Bidens were “following Hunter’s lead.” That account was anonymous-source context, not a reason Biden gave in his own statement.
