Spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20, Episode 10, “Burn It Down.” Meredith posts her Alzheimer’s research publicly and resigns from the Catherine Fox Foundation rather than hand the files to Tom Koracick. Catherine fires Amelia, but the finale cuts off before she decides Lucas’s fate. Jo discovers she is pregnant, and Richard questions whether he should keep operating after a patient dies. These are season-ending turns, not a series finale: the show continued beyond Season 20.
What happens in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 finale?
“Burn It Down” aired in the United States on May 30, 2024. Wildfires threaten the Seattle area, bringing a flood of patients to Grey Sloan and forcing the staff to improvise. ABC’s original listing described the wildfire emergency and noted next-day viewing on Hulu; availability can change by date and location. ABC episode listing.
The crisis reaches the hospital through Theo, a Station 19 firefighter injured when a tree branch crushes him. Teddy, although Catherine has fired her, steps in to help and operates on Theo’s heart in a hallway before he can be taken to an operating room. Ben returns to the field. Meanwhile, Lucas works with Dorian and Dorian’s mother on a database to locate patients and first responders; it confirms Ben is safe.
Does Meredith give Catherine her Alzheimer’s research?
No. Meredith and Amelia present their findings to Catherine, who claims the Foundation-funded work belongs to her and orders them to hand the files to Tom Koracick. Meredith has already uploaded the files to the National Institutes of Health website. She refuses to surrender them and resigns from the Foundation, preserving public access to the work at the cost of her position there.

Showrunner Meg Marinis described Meredith’s choice as standing up for medicine and finally coming out on top in her conflict with Catherine. The episode’s title can be read as a reference to Meredith’s willingness to disrupt her career rather than let Catherine control the research; Marinis also connected the moment to lessons Meredith learned from Ellis. That is creator context, not the only possible interpretation of the title. Shondaland interview with Meg Marinis.
Who is fired, and what happens to Lucas?
Amelia is fired; Lucas’s decision is withheld
Catherine fires Amelia. Teddy and Owen also lose access in the fallout, while Meredith’s resignation makes clear she is leaving the Foundation. Catherine’s confrontation with Lucas, however, ends before she announces a decision about his future. The episode does not show her firing him.

Does Richard retire after Garrett dies?
No retirement is shown. Richard lets Jules and Mika assist with repairing Garrett’s ruptured aneurysm, but Garrett later dies. Richard accepts responsibility and tells Meredith he may have reached the end of his time operating. Marinis clarified that this is not a retirement: Richard’s relationship with the operating room will change, and his next story concerns where he can best be used.
Which other relationships are left hanging?
- Blue and Molly: Blue recognizes Molly as his former fiancée, who has memory loss after a car accident, but denies knowing her.
- Jules and Mika: They share an intimate moment, without a settled relationship outcome.
- Meredith and Nick: They express a desire to build a life and work as partners, but Meredith’s next job is uncertain after she resigns.
Why does the finale end with so many cliff-hangers?
The jeopardy is largely professional and emotional rather than a major-character death or injury. Marinis said the team chose “career and emotional jeopardy” instead of “life jeopardy” for this finale. The result is a cluster of unresolved futures: Catherine has not ruled on Lucas, Jo has not told Link, Richard is reconsidering surgery, and Blue’s past with Molly has surfaced.
