Spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1, Episode 9, “Touched By An Ángel,” including a major character death.
Episode 9 turns Dexter’s collision with Leon Prater’s world into a tragedy for one of the series’ original characters. The loss has genuine weight, but the episode’s rush toward its next plot turn leaves too little room for the character’s perspective and for the farewell the moment deserves.

Who dies in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 9?
Angel Batista dies. TV Insider identifies him as the episode’s major death and frames the moment as the end of an era. TV Insider’s recap
Batista’s death matters because his pursuit of justice is bound up with his long history with Dexter. In a TVLine interview, David Zayas described the endpoint as fitting the story’s momentum around Batista seeking justice from Dexter. He also said that, knowing it might be the character’s endpoint, the experience felt sad but exciting as a way to put a button on Batista’s story. That is Zayas’s perspective on the character’s intended endpoint; it does not settle whether the episode gives the loss enough narrative preparation. TVLine’s interview with David Zayas

Was Batista’s death earned?
The broad dramatic idea is strong: Batista’s pursuit of justice finally brings his past with Dexter into the present. That makes his death more than a shocking interruption. It is a tragic consequence of a relationship the franchise has spent years building, and Zayas’s performance gives the loss its human gravity.
But a fitting destination and a fully earned journey are not the same thing. The episode’s momentum pushes toward Dexter’s next crisis, and that urgency risks making Batista’s death feel more useful to Dexter’s plot than complete as Batista’s story. The loss lands emotionally, yet the script could do more to let Batista’s choices and point of view shape the climax rather than treating his death chiefly as a force that moves Dexter forward.

That imbalance also affects the aftermath. A death with this much history needs space for the audience to register what has ended before the narrative accelerates again. Episode 9 gives the event weight, but its forward drive makes the farewell feel compressed. Zayas’s performance can carry grief and consequence; it cannot supply every moment of reflection the writing leaves underused.
What opportunities does the episode leave unused?
Batista’s pursuit of justice offers a clear route to a more satisfying final chapter: let him confront more of what he suspects, give him a consequential choice, and allow that choice to define the end of his story. Episode 9 points toward that dramatic reckoning, but its focus on escalation leaves less room for the fuller confrontation and recognition that could have made the tragedy feel unmistakably his.

The missed opportunity is not simply that Batista dies. It is that the episode could have made his agency—and the accumulated history between him and Dexter—the center of the loss for longer. A more sustained farewell would not necessarily require slowing the plot everywhere; it would mean making the consequences of this particular death linger before the story moves on.

“Touched By An Ángel” gives Dexter: Resurrection a major original-character death with a compelling connection to the series’ past. Batista’s pursuit of justice makes the endpoint dramatically apt, and Zayas brings the tragedy home. Yet the episode’s pace and emphasis on what the death does to Dexter leave Batista’s own reckoning and farewell less developed than they could be. It is a consequential episode, but not as complete an ending for Batista as the character’s history warrants.
