Its history spans an early screenplay idea, the original film’s hero car, later preservation efforts, functioning replicas, and licensed models. Here are ten useful facts, with those categories kept distinct.
1. The DeLorean is a fictional conversion
In the story, Doc Brown turns a DeLorean into a nuclear-powered time machine, and Marty uses it to travel to 1955. That is the film’s premise, not a claim about what a real DeLorean can do. The official 1985 production notes describe the machine and its role in the plot.
2. The filmmakers wanted a time machine that could move
Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale considered putting the time machine in a sports car. The DeLorean’s gull-wing doors offered comic potential, helping make it the choice for Doc’s mobile invention. The car therefore serves both the story’s practical needs and its humor, according to the official production notes.
3. An early idea put the machine in a refrigerator
Zemeckis recalled that the writers briefly considered a refrigerator. He said they worried that children might climb inside and lock themselves in, so the idea was abandoned. The production notes quote him describing that concern; the refrigerator was a discarded concept, not part of the finished film.

4. The screenplay took shape over several years
The official production notes say Zemeckis and Gale began drafting the screenplay in fall 1980. They revised it further before settling on the time-machine idea. The film was later shot at Universal Studios and on locations around Los Angeles, as the same notes document.
5. The original hero car has a documented preservation history
The original screen-used A-Car is distinct from later replicas and consumer models. A 2021 franchise announcement says it was inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register that year and was then on permanent loan to the Petersen Automotive Museum. That announcement establishes the loan as of 2021; it does not verify the car’s present display status.

OUTATIME: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine documents an effort to restore the car involving Bob Gale, Universal Studios, and fans. The official page lists a 2016 release and Blu-ray details. Disc formats and availability can change, so check the current listing before buying.
7. LEGO set 10300 builds one of three film configurations
The LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set 10300 is a licensed brick-built model, not a functioning car. The LEGO Group’s March 17, 2022 announcement specifies 1,872 pieces and 18+ age guidance. Builders can configure it as one of three film versions at a time. Details include a light-up flux capacitor and opening gull-wing doors. LEGO’s 2022 launch price is historical, not a current price; check the retailer and region for present stock and pricing.

8. One replica is described as road-worthy and available for experiences
The franchise site describes its Team Fox DeLorean as functioning, road-worthy, and street legal, with an internationally licensed and insured driver. Rental and appearance proceeds benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. These statements apply to that vehicle, not to replicas generally. See the official Back to the Future site for details, and confirm current availability and terms before making plans.
9. Anniversary releases add media and collectibles
Universal’s 40th-anniversary announcement describes a film set with 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats, as well as a collectible SteelBook, an OUTATIME license plate, a visual-history booklet, and replica archive items. Universal states that the first film was released on July 3, 1985. Current stock, formats, and retailer listings may differ from the announcement.

10. A replica, the hero car, and a model are not interchangeable
“DeLorean time machine” can refer to very different things. The original A-Car is a preserved screen-used vehicle with a reported 2021 register induction; the Team Fox car is a specific functioning replica described as road-worthy; a static replica may be for display only; and LEGO set 10300 is a buildable model. A vehicle’s road legality or rental availability needs evidence about that particular vehicle, not just its appearance.
