Netflix’s Devil May Cry Anime Has One Episode That Doesn’t Fit—and That’s Why It Matters

At 21 minutes, “The First Circle” is the shortest episode of Netflix’s Devil May Cry Season 1. Its childhood-focused story shifts attention before the finale, making it an outlier with a plausible role in the season’s arc.

The outlier is Season 1, Episode 6, “The First Circle.” Netflix lists it at 21 minutes, while the other seven episodes run 29–32 minutes, and its synopsis turns from the season’s endgame toward two intertwined childhoods. That makes it a conspicuous change of focus—and a useful point of contrast in a season built around a coming showdown. The importance of that shift is an interpretation, not a documented explanation from the show’s creators.

Why Episode 6 stands apart

Netflix lists eight episodes in Season 1. Episode 6, “The First Circle,” is the shortest at 21 minutes; the remaining episodes are listed at 29–32 minutes. Its official synopsis says the episode reveals “a haunting tale of two childhoods — parallel stories with intertwining fates.” The combination of a shorter runtime and a turn toward character history makes it the clearest candidate for the episode implied by the headline. Netflix’s episode listing provides the runtimes and synopses.

The synopsis does not establish how the episode feels in motion, or explain why it was made shorter. It does, however, point to a different narrative emphasis: rather than foregrounding the climactic confrontation, the episode looks backward at the people whose lives are bound up in the season’s conflict.

How it fits into the season’s arc

Netflix’s descriptions of Episodes 7 and 8 return attention to the showdown: Episode 7 prepares the final confrontation, and Episode 8 brings it to a head. Between them, Episode 6’s account of parallel childhoods changes the scale of the story from immediate conflict to personal history. That placement supports a reading of “The First Circle” as context for the closing episodes: it can give the audience a way to understand the lives and ties behind the impending clash.

That is a reading of the official episode descriptions and their order, not a confirmed statement of intent. The available creator comments do not explain the shorter runtime or identify Episode 6 as a deliberate pause, response to criticism, or turning point in the series.

Why the detour can matter

A backstory episode can feel like it interrupts momentum precisely because it asks viewers to attend to a different question. Instead of only asking what happens in the showdown, “The First Circle” invites attention to how the characters’ histories intertwine. In a finale-driven season, that shift can make the stakes feel less abstract by connecting the conflict to the people involved.

That makes the episode’s difference meaningful without proving that every viewer will find it successful. Netflix identifies the series as based on Capcom’s Devil May Cry game, and some commenters have argued that the anime’s political themes feel mismatched with the franchise. Those are individual opinions, not a measured account of audience response or a consensus. Netflix Tudum’s series feature identifies the game as the source and Adi Shankar as showrunner.

What the episode’s difference does—and does not—tell us

  • It does show a formal contrast: the listed runtime is shorter, and the synopsis emphasizes childhood and intertwined lives.
  • It gives a plausible narrative function: the backstory arrives just before the final two episodes’ confrontation, offering context for the season’s closing conflict.
  • It does not establish a creator’s rationale: no cited creator statement explains the episode’s length or design.
  • It does not establish audience consensus: fan comments illustrate disagreement, but no relevant reception statistic or study figure is established here.

Shankar told Netflix Tudum, “Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform — period.” It is context for the project’s ambition, not an explanation of “The First Circle.”
