The monologue that preceded Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension aired on September 15, 2025. Kimmel was discussing reactions to the killing of Charlie Kirk when he accused people in MAGA circles of trying to distance the alleged killer from their movement and score political points. Two days later, ABC announced an indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The sequence matters: the public record documents what Kimmel said and what the network and station groups announced, but not every private reason behind their decisions.
What Kimmel said in the September 15 monologue
Kimmel’s remarks came during a segment about the response to Charlie Kirk’s killing. The Associated Press quoted him saying: “The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” He also said, “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.” (Associated Press)

The remarks criticized what Kimmel described as political efforts to define the alleged killer’s affiliations. They were not a claim that a particular person or group committed the killing. That distinction became central to the response when Kimmel addressed the controversy after the show returned.

| September 17, 2025 | Nexstar said it would preempt the program on its stations. ABC announced that the show was suspended indefinitely. ABC reported that FCC Chair Brendan Carr had called for Kimmel’s suspension before the network’s announcement. (Associated Press) |
| September 22–23, 2025 | Disney said the program would return on September 23 after what it described as thoughtful conversations with Kimmel. He addressed the remarks in his return monologue. (ABC News) |

ABC’s suspension and the affiliate groups’ preemptions were separate actions: ABC took the program off its schedule nationally, while station groups separately chose not to carry it on their affiliates. The publicly reported timeline does not establish that Carr’s remarks alone caused ABC or the station groups to act.

What ABC and Disney said about the suspension
Disney’s explanation, reported by ABC, was that it wanted to avoid escalating an emotionally charged moment and regarded some of Kimmel’s comments as ill-timed and insensitive. The company said: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.” (ABC News)
When Disney announced the return, it said the decision followed thoughtful conversations with Kimmel. Those public statements explain the company’s stated rationale; they do not reveal the full details of internal deliberations. (ABC News)
What Kimmel said when the show returned
In his September 23 return monologue, Kimmel said he had not meant to make light of Kirk’s murder or blame a particular group. He acknowledged that viewers could have found his earlier comments ill-timed or unclear, and defended the value of being able to speak on a show like his. ABC described the return monologue as more than 15 minutes long. (ABC News)
“It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel said. He added, “That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make.” (ABC News)

The pressure surrounding the decision—and what it does not prove
Before ABC’s suspension announcement, Carr publicly urged action and warned broadcasters that the FCC could pursue additional work if companies did not act. The AP quoted him saying: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” (Associated Press)
Senate Democrats criticized Carr’s conduct as censorship and a violation of the First Amendment. That was their characterization of the controversy, not a court ruling established by the cited reporting. The episode was a dispute involving a television network, station owners, a federal official and political speech; the available reporting does not establish a legal finding that the suspension was unconstitutional. Where to watch the episodes
In September 2025, ABC reported that full episodes were available the next day on Hulu and Disney+, with clips on the show’s YouTube page. That report is dated and does not confirm current availability, regional access or subscription terms. (ABC News)
