The idea had surfaced earlier as an internal prototype in 2022, but the announced feature was not a Myspace-style autoplay: visitors had to tap play, and the selection was a short excerpt rather than a full song.
What Instagram’s profile-song feature does
Instagram’s announced feature lets a user select a track from the platform’s licensed music library and display it on their profile. Instagram described the launch as another way for people to express themselves through music. The selection stays on the profile until the user changes it.
At launch, users could choose a segment of up to 30 seconds. A visitor could start or pause playback from the profile; the song did not begin automatically when someone opened the page. That distinction makes the feature Myspace-like in its use of music as profile self-expression, but not in the autoplay experience often associated with the comparison.
How to add a song, according to launch-era instructions
-

How the feature developed
In October 2022, app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted an Instagram profile-music option. A Meta spokesperson characterized that version as an internal prototype that was not being tested externally at the time, according to PetaPixel’s October 19, 2022 report. Instagram later announced profile songs publicly in August 2024.
For the public launch, Sabrina Carpenter’s profile featured a teaser of “Taste” ahead of its release. That was a launch example, not a sign that profile songs were limited to artists. TechCrunch’s August 22, 2024 coverage described the feature and the launch example.

Is profile music available on every Instagram account now?
The August 2024 launch coverage establishes the feature’s announced behavior, but the sources cited here do not verify its availability for every account or region as of October 4, 2026. If the music option is not visible in Edit Profile, these launch-era reports alone cannot determine whether that reflects account or regional availability, a changed interface, or another cause.
