There is no definitive ranking of the best slasher movies: a list based on critics’ scores will differ from one based on audience ratings, historical influence, or personal taste. This guide uses Rotten Tomatoes’ 100 Best Slasher Movies Ranked as a critic-score reference, while explaining what its order can—and cannot—tell you. It also gives a practical way to choose a film by mood and style.
How to read a slasher ranking
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated November 2, 2025, orders its 100 films using the Tomatometer, with Certified Fresh films placed first. That makes it a comparison of aggregated critics’ responses, not a measurement of historical influence, audience affection, scare effectiveness, or how closely a film represents the subgenre. The list’s order is also not simply a descending sequence of percentages: its Certified Fresh grouping matters.
For comparison, Letterboxd’s Official Lists page dated September 24, 2026 orders its “Top 50 Slasher Films” by average member rating and requires at least 1,000 ratings. It also sets its own eligibility rules for what qualifies. These rankings answer different questions, so their positions are illustrative rather than directly comparable.
A more rounded editorial ranking would weigh craft and critical response alongside influence, use or reinvention of the stalking-and-killing structure, memorable characters and suspense, originality, and accessibility for contemporary viewers. Those are useful criteria, not a documented formula behind either published list. Any placement produced by them remains an editorial judgment, not an objective verdict.

What counts as a slasher?
The boundary is disputed, including where the genre begins. Rotten Tomatoes describes slashers as films featuring killers who use bladed weapons or similar means to murder or terrorize victims, and identifies Peeping Tom, Psycho, A Bay of Blood, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and Black Christmas as possible starting points rather than a universally agreed first film.
Letterboxd’s list uses a narrower working definition: a killer with a sharp, hand-held weapon stalks and kills a group one by one, typically across multiple kill sequences. Its eligibility rules also specify narrative features longer than 40 minutes with a festival premiere, theatrical distribution, or professional streaming release. The list excludes documentaries, self-released web videos, direct-to-video films, recuts, stage works, series, specials, and episodes, while allowing TV movies.

For a broad guide, a useful rule is to include films in which a human or supernatural killer stalks a sequence of victims, while allowing a limited number of influential precursors and hybrids when slasher elements are central. That is a practical editorial boundary, not a claim of scholarly consensus. It also leaves room for the genre’s range: stylish mysteries, grim violence, trashy thrills, and supernatural horror can all sit under the slasher umbrella.
What the leading entries show
Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide illustrates how a critic-score list can mix foundational titles with later variations. Its first five include films from 1960 through 2022, rather than limiting the category to masked killers or a single decade.

| Rotten Tomatoes position | Film | Tomatometer | What the placement does—and doesn’t—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Psycho (1960) | 97% | A highly regarded early-canon candidate; the position alone does not settle the genre’s starting point. |
| #2 | Halloween (1978) | 97% | A central slasher reference with the same listed percentage as the top film. |
| #3 | Peeping Tom (1960) | 96% | Another early-canon candidate, underscoring that origin stories depend on definition. |
| #4 | A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) | 93% | A supernatural strand appears alongside more conventional stalk-and-kill films. |
| #5 | X (2022) | 94% | A contemporary variation appears in the ranking; the order is not a simple percentage sort. |
These are positions and scores as reported in the guide updated November 2, 2025; scores and rankings can change. Do not read the table as proof that a higher-ranked film is more influential, more frightening, or more representative than one below it.
Letterboxd’s separate member-rating list, dated September 24, 2026, starts with Psycho, Peeping Tom, Scream, Deep Red, Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Halloween. The contrasting order reflects a different audience and method, not a correction to the Tomatometer ranking.

Key films and the different paths through the genre
These examples help explain why “best” can mean different things in a slasher list. The films below are selected reference points, not a substitute for the full 100 entries in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide.
Early-canon candidates and genre foundations
- Psycho (1960): A prominent precursor or early-canon candidate, depending on how narrowly a viewer defines “slasher.” Its presence near the top of both the critic-score guide and Letterboxd’s member-rating list shows how influential the boundary question is to rankings.
- Peeping Tom (1960): Another frequent starting-point candidate. Like Psycho, it complicates any claim that one later film definitively invented the form.
- A Bay of Blood (1971), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and Black Christmas (1974): These titles are among the works named in discussions of the genre’s beginnings. Black Christmas is also described in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide through its tension and holiday atmosphere.
Classic and supernatural slasher cycles
- Halloween (1978): A core point of reference in the critic ranking, listed at #2 with a 97% Tomatometer in the November 2, 2025 update.
- A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): Its inclusion among the top entries shows that supernatural elements do not disqualify a film from a broad slasher category.
Self-aware revivals and contemporary variations
- Scream 2 (1997): The guide’s consensus description points to its play with sequel conventions, a useful entry point for viewers interested in slashers that know the rules they are bending.
- Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021), X (2022), Pearl (2022), Thanksgiving (2023), and MaXXXine (2024): All appear in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, showing that its selection extends into recent films and varied approaches to the form. Its description of X emphasizes a fresh variation on the formula.
- The Final Girls: The guide’s consensus description highlights affection for slasher tropes alongside emotional depth, illustrating that the category can accommodate comedy and reflection as well as suspense and violence.
Choosing a slasher by mood
Rather than treating rank as a viewing order, start with the quality you want from the film. These are orientation points drawn from the guide’s descriptions and its featured titles, not claims that every viewer will react the same way.
Best Value

- For a more contemporary variation: The guide presents X as a fresh turn on the formula.
- For affection and emotional depth alongside the tropes: The guide’s description of The Final Girls points to that blend.
- For supernatural horror: A Nightmare on Elm Street is a clear example of the slasher meeting supernatural elements.
What rankings can and cannot tell you
Rotten Tomatoes’ genre explainer reports an average Tomatometer of 50% across 188 films, with 71 Fresh and 117 Rotten. It also reports that the original films of Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre average 85%, while their sequels and remakes average 28%. The page does not state a publication year for these figures, so treat them as page-specific aggregates rather than current, date-stamped measurements.
Those numbers describe the page’s catalog and its scoring framework. They do not establish which films had the greatest cultural impact or work best for a particular viewer. Use critic and member rankings as ways to discover titles, then let genre history, tone, and personal taste guide what you watch.
