Childhood in a working-class family
Behar was born Josephine Occhiuto and grew up in Brooklyn. A photo timeline dates her birth to October 7, 1942; the official ABC biographies cited here do not independently repeat that date. In a 2022 TIME profile, Behar recalled growing up in a fifth-floor walk-up, with her mother sewing and her father driving a truck. She remembered cold winters and a lively extended family.

College and the classroom
TIME reports that Behar was the first in her family to attend college. She studied English education and taught high-school English before turning toward show business.

From teaching to stand-up
A late start in comedy
Behar began performing stand-up in the early 1980s, after her divorce, according to TIME. Her start was not an instant breakthrough: the profile describes early success as inconsistent. She recalled the barriers facing women comics at the time, saying, “Stand-up comedy, especially for a woman in those days, was a particularly suicidal occupation.”

A career beyond talk television
Behar’s work has extended across television, film, theater, radio and solo performance. ABC’s official biography lists two HBO comedy specials, the television series Baby Boom and Crisis in Six Scenes, and films including This Is My Life and Manhattan Murder Mystery. It also records her radio and solo shows, theater work and playwriting.

Books and honors
ABC News’ biography for The View’s 2025–2026 season says Behar has written five books, including two for children. A secondary photo timeline names the children’s titles as Sheetzucacapoopoo: My Kind of Dog (2006) and Sheetzucacapoopoo: Max Goes to the Dogs (2009); those title and publication-year details come from the timeline rather than the official biographies cited here.

Joining—and leaving—The View
An original co-host
Behar joined The View as part of its original cast. TIME recounts that Barbara Walters saw her perform at a birthday event for Milton Berle and later offered her a chance on the show. ABC says Behar was an original cast member for 16 years.

ABC News’ 2025–2026 biography says her play My First Ex-Husband is touring to Boston at the time that biography was issued; touring information is time-sensitive and should not be read as a statement about current dates or availability.

How to read the photos
The timeline’s sequence is a useful way to see the career’s major transitions, but photographs do not establish every date or detail on their own. The photo sequence cited here is a secondary copy hosted on a third-party domain, not a definitive archive or rights record. For publication, verify each image’s provenance, date, identity, original caption and permission with the publisher or rights holder. The birth date and several photo-specific milestones noted in that timeline should be attributed to it unless independently confirmed.
