For a carved R2-D2 or Death Star jack-o’-lantern, transfer a bold stencil to a hollowed pumpkin, then cut along the pinprick outline. Keep R2-D2’s shapes broad and connected; make the Death Star recognizable with a sphere, an equator trench and a large circular dish. If you want a dimensional Death Star instead, StarWars.com’s tutorial uses a painted craft pumpkin, a bottle opening and glow sticks—not a conventional carved, edible pumpkin.
Choose the version that fits your project

There is no R2-D2-specific official stencil established by the sources here. Treat that design as your own outline or use a separately sourced pattern; the steps below explain how to transfer a pattern, not where to obtain an official R2-D2 template.
Tools and materials for a carved pumpkin
For either carved design, gather a pumpkin, spoon or scraper, printed pattern, scissors, tape, push-pin or pumpkin poker, small carving saw or knife, and a light. NASA’s pumpkin-carving instructions list these kinds of tools and materials. Its stencil method is general guidance, not an R2-D2 or Death Star pattern.
- Choose a pumpkin with a broad, reasonably smooth face for the design. This makes it easier to position paper on the curved surface.
- Use a high-contrast R2-D2 outline with a clear dome, eye, body panels and legs. Keep the sections that must remain in place thick enough to connect; avoid fragile slivers.
- For the Death Star, a sphere outline, dark equator or trench, and large circular dish give the design its essential graphic cues.
Transfer and carve an R2-D2 or Death Star stencil
- Open and hollow the pumpkin. Cut an opening, remove the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside smooth. Behind the design, NASA recommends thinning the wall to 1 to 1½ inches.
- Print and simplify the design. For R2-D2, use large connected forms rather than tiny panel marks. For the Death Star, prioritize the sphere, trench and circular dish. These are practical design adaptations, not published stencils.
- Fit the paper to the pumpkin. Trim the pattern, tape it in place and press or crease the paper so it follows the curve as closely as possible.
- Transfer the outline. Poke through the pattern with a push-pin or pumpkin poker. StarWars.com’s Andor pumpkin instructions recommend pinholes no more than a centimeter apart.
- Remove the paper and cut the design. Saw through the dotted lines at right angles to the pumpkin’s surface, starting near the center and working outward. NASA gives this same direction for its stencil-carving method. Avoid pressing too hard, support partly cut sections and push pieces out gently.
- Add a light. Put a tea light or battery-powered light inside and replace the lid. NASA lists a tea light; StarWars.com’s Andor pumpkin instructions use an LED light.
Make StarWars.com’s painted craft-pumpkin Death Star
This alternative follows Kelly Knox’s StarWars.com tutorial, published October 23, 2018. It makes a stone-textured decorative craft pumpkin with a bottle opening, painted trench and lights, plus an optional glow-stick laser effect. The activity page says the project should be done with adult supervision.

Gather the craft materials
- Large craft pumpkin and pumpkin carving knife
- Light-gray stone-texture spray paint
- Empty plastic bottle
- White, black and glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint
- Five thin green glow sticks
- Paintbrush and chalk
- Hot glue gun
Build the display
- Paint the craft pumpkin with the stone-texture paint and let it dry.
- Use the bottle end as a guide to mark a circle slightly above the pumpkin’s midpoint. Draw a second, slightly smaller circle inside it.
- Cut the smaller opening so the bottle fits snugly. Insert the bottle end and glue it in place, then paint it to match the pumpkin.
- Paint a black equator or trench around the sphere. Add white dots for lights and apply glow-in-the-dark paint over them.
- Arrange the glow sticks around the bottle dish to suggest a laser. The tutorial says they can be poked in instead of glued and should be removable for replacement.
The bottle and glow sticks are part of this specific craft display, not required steps for a carved Death Star jack-o’-lantern.

Carving and glue-gun safety
- Have an adult supervise knife and carving-saw work, and keep glue-gun work supervised.
- Use controlled cuts and avoid forcing the blade or poker; NASA cautions that too much pressure can break the pumpkin.
- For the carved version, use a tea light or battery-powered light. A battery-powered LED is an option shown in StarWars.com’s Andor pumpkin instructions.
