The five former hosts of The Tonight Show are Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. Their exits were not all replacements in the same sense: Allen left for other work, Paar for his own program, Carson retired, and O’Brien’s brief tenure ended in a dispute over NBC’s schedule. Leno hosted in two separate periods before Jimmy Fallon succeeded him in 2014.
Who hosted The Tonight Show, and when?
The program began on September 27, 1954, with Steve Allen, according to the Library of Congress. Its host sequence is Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. Leno’s two stints—before and after O’Brien—are the reason the sequence includes six people but seven consecutive host periods.
| Host | Tenure | Departure or handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Steve Allen | 1954–1957 | Left to pursue other work; NBC later reset the format around a host-led comedy and interview show. |
| Jack Paar | 1957–1962 | Left for his own program; Johnny Carson was selected as his successor, with the handoff delayed by Carson’s prior commitment. |
| Johnny Carson | 1962–1992 | Retired; Jay Leno ultimately inherited the host position. |
| Jay Leno | 1992–2009; 2010–2014 | Moved aside for Conan O’Brien in 2009, returned in 2010 after the scheduling dispute, and left in 2014 when Jimmy Fallon took over. |
| Conan O’Brien | 2009–2010 | Left NBC after rejecting its proposed schedule change, which would have moved The Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m. |
| Jimmy Fallon | 2014–present in the cited historical accounts | Successor to Leno, not a former host in this lineup. |
The Television Academy archive also records the show’s host lineage. The dates describe host eras, not a single uninterrupted schedule for Leno.
Why did Steve Allen leave The Tonight Show?
Allen, the original host, left in 1957 to pursue other work. Both the Library of Congress and TIME’s history of the host transitions describe his departure as a career move, not a firing. NBC then experimented with formats before returning to a host-centered comedy and interview program with Paar.

Why did Jack Paar leave?
Paar left in 1962 for his own program, according to TIME. This is distinct from his much-publicized temporary walkout in 1960 after NBC censorship; that episode was not his final departure. NBC had chosen Carson as the next host, but Carson’s existing commitment delayed the transition, as the Library of Congress account explains.
Why did Johnny Carson retire?
Carson hosted from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. NBC executives selected a successor, and Leno ultimately took over, according to the Library of Congress. David Letterman was also part of the succession debate, but the available accounts do not establish NBC’s private reasoning in enough detail to state a definitive explanation for its choice.

Why did Jay Leno leave, return and leave again?
The 2009 handoff to Conan O’Brien
NBC arranged for O’Brien to take over The Tonight Show in 2009 while Leno moved to a prime-time program. The arrangement became unstable. The Associated Press reported that affiliates were concerned Leno’s show was not a strong enough lead-in to their newscasts, while ratings for The Tonight Show were also slipping. NBC proposed shortening Leno’s program and restoring him to 11:35 p.m.; that would have pushed O’Brien’s Tonight to 12:05 a.m. The AP’s retrospective describes those pressures and the proposed reshuffle.
The 2010 return
O’Brien rejected the proposed time change and left NBC. Leno returned to The Tonight Show in 2010. In its coverage of O’Brien’s account, CBS News reports that he left after NBC announced the move. The change was therefore a scheduling conflict involving the network’s plans and O’Brien’s refusal—not simply a straightforward replacement of one host by another.

The 2014 handoff to Jimmy Fallon
Leno left again in 2014, when Fallon took over. TIME describes the Fallon transition as a planned succession, but the available sources do not establish one definitive official reason for Leno’s departure. It is more accurate to record the handoff than to assign it a specific ratings, political or personal motive.
Why did Conan O’Brien leave The Tonight Show?
O’Brien’s tenure was planned years in advance, but it lasted only from 2009 to 2010. NBC’s proposal to return Leno to 11:35 would have moved The Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m. O’Brien declined that change and left NBC. AP’s account places the proposal amid affiliate concerns over Leno’s prime-time lead-in and weakening ratings context; CBS’s coverage describes O’Brien leaving after the network announced its plan. Those are documented scheduling pressures, not proof of a single personal motive on either side.

- Allen: left for other work; NBC subsequently changed its programming approach.
- Paar: left for his own program; Carson was the designated successor after a delayed handoff.
- Carson: retired, and Leno inherited the position.
- Leno: handed the show to O’Brien in a planned transition, returned amid the scheduling dispute, and later handed it to Fallon.
- O’Brien: left after rejecting NBC’s proposed schedule reshuffle.
So “replaced” works as shorthand for a changing host lineup, but it obscures important differences: some hosts left by choice, one retired, and the Leno–O’Brien transition became a network scheduling conflict.
