For a French romance that is lively and complicated, start with Jules et Jim; for young love in a bittersweet musical, choose The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Portrait of a Lady on Fire offers a restrained period romance, while Hiroshima mon amour ties love to memory and historical trauma. This is a curated starter list, not an objective ranking.
Which French romance should you watch?
| Film | Romantic experience | Best fit | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jules et Jim (1962) | A French New Wave love triangle | Viewers drawn to unconventional relationships and restless energy | The triangle is complicated, not an idealized romance. |
| The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) | An all-sung story of first love | Viewers who want a visually lush musical about young love and circumstance | Every line is sung, and the story is bittersweet. |
| Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) | A contemplative period romance between an artist and her subject | Viewers seeking a restrained queer love story | Its pacing is deliberate. |
| Hiroshima mon amour (1959) | A formally adventurous love story entangled with memory | Viewers open to reflection and historical context | The romance cannot be separated from painful history. |
Four French romance films to choose from
Jules et Jim (1962): a French New Wave love triangle
François Truffaut’s film follows two friends who fall for the same woman. The BFI dates it to 1962 and describes the triangle; Criterion also presents it as a romantic triangle. Its appeal is not a model of uncomplicated love, but the unsettled energy of a relationship that resists tidy categories. It is a strong starting point if you want French New Wave romance with emotional and formal movement.
Criterion identifies the film as French and lists a restored 2K digital restoration on Blu-ray. That identifies an edition, not current retailer stock.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964): first love as an all-sung musical
Jacques Demy’s musical tells its story entirely in song: even the dialogue is sung. The BFI describes it as an all-sung tale of first love, and its bittersweet tone makes it a good choice for viewers who want romance shaped by circumstance rather than a conventional happy ending. Choose it if you welcome a musical form as much as the love story itself.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019): a restrained artist-and-subject romance
CĂ©line Sciamma sets this romance in the eighteenth century and centers it on a painter and her subject. Criterion describes that premise and reports that Sciamma has characterized the film as a manifesto about the female gaze. The characterization belongs to the director; it should not be treated as a universal or uncontested account of how the film sees its characters. Its measured pace suits viewers who prefer a contemplative period romance to a fast-moving plot.
Hiroshima mon amour (1959): love, memory and historical trauma
Alain Resnais’s film follows an affair between a French woman and a Japanese man, bound up with personal memory and the historical aftermath of Hiroshima. The BFI includes it in its French New Wave context. It is the choice here for viewers seeking a reflective, formally adventurous film, but its historical pain is central—not just a backdrop for a conventional romance.

These films show how widely French romance cinema can vary: New Wave relationship drama, an all-sung musical and a contemporary film set in the eighteenth century. The BFI’s writing on love and longing in the French New Wave offers broader context for the era’s treatment of desire and relationships; its French New Wave film list includes Hiroshima mon amour.

Catalogs and physical stock depend on territory and date. The BFI Player’s Romance collection lists Jules et Jim and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, but a collection page does not guarantee either film is currently available in every country. Check your local catalog before planning a watch. For a physical edition, Criterion’s Jules and Jim film page identifies its restored Blu-ray; its French New Wave collection provides additional collection context.
