Adolescence is my TV show of the year because its four episodes turn a murder investigation into an increasingly intimate examination of a family, a school and the adults trying to understand what happened. Each episode unfolds in a continuous take, drawing you through the action without the usual cuts to other places or perspectives. The result is gripping television—not a documentary, but a carefully constructed fictional drama that leaves its hardest questions open.
What is Adolescence about?
The Netflix limited crime drama begins when 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested for the murder of a girl at his school. The story follows the investigation and its effects on Jamie’s family and the people around him, widening its view from the arrest to the school community and the adults trying to make sense of the case.
Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne created and wrote the series; Philip Barantini directed it. Netflix lists Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty among the stars, alongside Owen Cooper, Christine Tremarco, Faye Marsay and Amélie Pease. Netflix’s displayed episode runtimes are 65, 51, 52 and 60 minutes, and its title page shows a 13+ rating. That rating and the page’s availability can vary by market. Netflix’s series page has the current listing for your location.
How the four episodes widen the story
The structure keeps the crime at the center while changing what the viewer is allowed to see. Netflix’s episode descriptions trace a progression from Jamie’s arrest and questioning, to a search at the school, a meeting with a psychologist, and the family trying to mark Eddie’s birthday. Each stage shifts the focus: from what investigators can establish, to what the school community knows, to the private strain the case puts on a family.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That widening lens is part of what kept me watching. The show does not treat the investigation as a puzzle that can be solved simply by collecting clues. It asks what responsibility means, what adults could have seen or missed, and how much anyone can know about another person. Its creators describe Jamie’s story as fictional, not based on a specific real person or crime. The broader concerns about violence by teenage boys against teenage girls are real-world context, not evidence that this particular case happened.
Why the continuous takes make it so gripping
Every episode was filmed as one continuous take. Instead of cutting between rooms or jumping to a different character elsewhere, the camera travels with people through connected spaces. That gives scenes an unbroken momentum: tension carries forward because the viewer stays alongside the characters, with little chance to step outside the moment.

The format also limits what the show can reveal. A camera cannot leave a scene to show what someone else is doing, so the viewer’s perspective is shaped by where the characters go and what they encounter. Jack Thorne described the episodes as “four different windows into Jamie’s world.” Those windows are carefully chosen: the show’s power comes partly from what it lets us witness and partly from what remains beyond view.
The continuous-shot effect is a storytelling choice, not proof that every event unfolds literally in real time. Its achievement is the sustained sense of presence: the camera’s movement makes transitions feel immediate, while the limited perspective keeps uncertainty alive.

The planning behind the apparent spontaneity
The flowing camera work looks spontaneous, but Netflix’s behind-the-scenes account describes a demanding rehearsal process. The cast and crew spent three weeks on each episode, first walking through the script scene by scene and rehearsing the technical movement. The final week allowed ten attempts—two a day. Episode two was captured on its last take.
The scale of the school sequence made that precision especially important. Director Philip Barantini said it involved 300 children, as well as teachers and chaperones. The choreography had to account for the camera, performers and large groups moving through the same spaces. Netflix Tudum’s behind-the-scenes feature describes the preparation and shooting schedule.

Location design was part of the timing, too. The Associated Press reported that the police station was built for the production and that its stairs were calculated to fit a character’s walking time and dialogue. These practical details help explain why the episodes feel so fluid: the movement was built and rehearsed to look unforced. The Associated Press report covers the production’s camera choreography and location planning.

Adolescence holds attention not by promising a definitive explanation for Jamie, but by refusing to collapse a complicated story into one neat cause. Graham has described the series’ central concern as “alienation,” an interpretation of the drama rather than a clinical diagnosis or a settled explanation of real-world violence.

Graham has also said the makers wanted the series to prompt conversations between parents and children. In Netflix Tudum’s account, he says it “doesn’t give any answers.” That openness is a strength when the questions are about responsibility, influence and prevention: the series invites discussion without pretending a fictional case can settle them. Netflix Tudum’s interview with Graham discusses the show’s themes and intentions.
The distinction between fiction and real-life inspiration matters. Jamie is not presented as a real individual, and the series is not a documentary reconstruction. Its urgency comes from the issues it raises, while its characters and specific events belong to a drama.
Why it earns my TV show of the year verdict
“Show of the year” is a personal verdict, not an objective ranking. What makes Adolescence my choice is the way its form and subject reinforce each other: the unbroken camera holds you close to the characters, while the story steadily expands beyond one suspect to the family, school and wider circle of adults. The tension is immediate, but the questions linger after the episode ends.
The series also received major industry recognition. Netflix Tudum reports eight wins at the 2025 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, writing, directing, cinematography and acting awards. The same outlet reported four wins at the 2026 Golden Globes and said Adolescence led all series in wins. Those awards establish significant recognition, not a universal year-end ranking. Netflix Tudum’s awards coverage reports the tallies.
