Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Wrong Man is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film about a musician and family man repeatedly mistaken for a criminal. Starring Henry Fonda and Vera Miles, it is connected to the real case of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero.
What is The Wrong Man about?
The film follows Manny, a working musician whose resemblance to a crime suspect leads witnesses and authorities to identify him as the perpetrator. The mistaken identity turns an ordinary family man’s life into a struggle against an accusation he says is false.
The Museum of Modern Art lists the U.S. production as directed by Alfred Hitchcock, with a runtime of 105 minutes and Henry Fonda and Vera Miles among its cast: MoMA.
Is The Wrong Man based on a true story?
Yes. The story is associated with the case of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero. The Morgan Library & Museum catalog records two earlier accounts linked to the case and film: Maxwell Anderson’s The True Story of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero and Herbert Brean’s “A Case of Identity,” published in Life: Morgan Library & Museum catalog.

The connection to a real case is the defining point of distinction from a purely invented Hitchcock thriller. The available records establish the case lineage, but do not by themselves document every difference between the film and the events.
Who stars in the film?
Henry Fonda plays Manny, and Vera Miles is also a principal performer. MoMA’s film record identifies both among the cast. Director Guillermo del Toro described the film as “Hitchcock’s ‘The Book of Job.’”

Where can you watch or find a copy?
A home-video edition is a natural way to watch or collect the film, but no specific DVD or Blu-ray listing, region, edition contents, price, or current stock status is established here. Check the exact edition and playback compatibility before buying. Maxwell Anderson’s book is a possible companion for readers interested in the case; its current retail availability is likewise unconfirmed.
