That is a dated record figure, not a live total for October 2026.
What is Ne Zha 2 about?
The film continues the story of the 2019 Ne Zha. After Nezha and Aobing’s souls are saved, their physical forms face dissolution. With help from Taiyi Zhenren and a Seven-Colored Lotus, they try to rebuild their bodies and confront further challenges, according to a Xinhua summary republished by the Hunan government (Hunan government).

China’s National Film Administration identifies the Chinese title as 哪吒之魔童闹海, commonly shortened to 哪吒2, and describes it as a Chinese animated feature (National Film Administration).
Is it a sequel, and who is Ne Zha?
Yes. Ne Zha 2 follows the 2019 film Ne Zha. Its central figure, Ne Zha, comes from Chinese mythological and literary tradition; he was not created for either film. The Associated Press describes him as a child god-general and mischievous boy associated with the story known as Creation of the Gods, written about 400 years ago (Associated Press). The film should not be treated as a literal adaptation of a single ancient text.

How did it surpass Inside Out 2?
Guinness World Records lists Ne Zha 2 as the highest-grossing animated film at the global box office. Its worldwide figure through June 30, 2025, was 14,265,482,649 yuan ($1,989,046,691), compared with Inside Out 2’s previous record of $1,698,831,782 (Guinness World Records).
The China-only figure is a different measure with a different cutoff date: Guinness reported 13,967,697,245 yuan ($1,945,234,399) in China through June 17, 2025. Do not confuse that single-market total with the worldwide figure.
Earlier milestones were reported during the film’s release. China’s National Film Administration said the total including presales had passed 6.7922 billion yuan by 9 p.m. on February 7, 2025, overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ North American single-market gross; the same report said the total exceeded 7 billion yuan by February 8 (National Film Administration). These are release-period milestones, not the later Guinness worldwide total.

The sequel opened in China during the 2025 Spring Festival period. The National Film Administration’s contemporaneous report listed Australia for February 13, 2025, and North America for February 14, 2025. Those are historical release dates, not current screening information.

How large was the production?
A Xi’an municipal government account says 138 Chinese production teams worked on the large-scale animation, and names Xi’an Digital Monster Technology as one participant in visual-effects work (Xi’an Municipal Government). That is an example of the production’s scale, not a complete crew count.
What does the record say about its reach?
The box-office record establishes its commercial scale, but it does not by itself explain the film’s appeal. In the Xinhua report republished by the Hunan government, director Jiaozi (Yang Yu) said the question was whether a script, story, and characters could move audiences worldwide. The film’s mythological source gives it a cultural context beyond its record: Ne Zha is a familiar figure in Chinese tradition, reimagined for a contemporary animated story.
