Kristen Bell has described her marriage to Dax Shepard as a continuing practice of growth, compromise and teamwork. Those remarks came in an October 2025 interview, days after criticism arose over her anniversary post joking about a husband killing his wife. The reports do not establish that Bell’s comments were an apology or a direct response to the criticism.
What Bell calls the secret to her marriage
In an October 2025 appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Bell said she was glad she chose Shepard because “he has a commitment to growth at all times.” She described a relationship in which both partners keep adapting and make compromises that work for both of them, rather than keeping score.
“And sometimes it’s gonna ebb and sometimes it’s gonna flow,” she said, adding that partners should recognize “it’s not me against you, it’s us against the world.” In context, the phrase describes how Bell framed their partnership; it is not evidence that the couple considers critics its opponents. Yahoo’s syndicated Entertainment Weekly report and E! News’ report cover the interview. They differ on its precise date, so October 2025 is the clearest supported timing.
Why Bell’s anniversary post drew criticism
On October 17, 2025, Bell posted to mark what she called the couple’s 12th wedding anniversary. The caption recalled Shepard telling her: “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.” Us Weekly reproduced the caption, as did Fox News.

Critics objected to making domestic violence the subject of an anniversary joke, particularly during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Other commenters understood the wording as dark humor between the couple. The reactions were divided; neither interpretation establishes Bell’s intent beyond what she actually wrote.
What an advocacy group said
A National Network to End Domestic Violence representative, quoted by Us Weekly on October 21, said: “There’s nothing funny about domestic violence ‘jokes’ that trivialize the very real fear, trauma and pain that millions of victims and survivors face each day.” The representative added that during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, people have a responsibility to support survivors and speak about the issue seriously. That is the organization’s stated criticism, as reported by Us Weekly.

Did Bell directly answer the criticism?
The timing of Bell’s interview placed her relationship comments in the same news cycle as the post’s backlash, but the available reports do not show her explicitly addressing the criticism in that interview. Her comments describe how she thinks about commitment and compromise; they should not be presented as an apology or a direct defense of the caption.

In an April 2026 report, Us Weekly recounted Shepard discussing the controversy on his podcast, Armchair Expert. He said he had not known about the backlash for about a week and a half, until someone brought it to his attention, and said Bell had learned of it through her publicist. “I didn’t know, and Kristen knew through her publicist but didn’t tell me. So, I actually didn’t know, and this was brought to my attention,” he said. This is Shepard’s account of what happened, not independent verification of the couple’s private communications. Us Weekly’s April 2026 report also said Bell had not publicly addressed the backlash as of that update.
