Linda Ronstadt spoke out on September 11, 2024, the day before Donald Trump held a campaign rally at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall in Tucson, her hometown. She said the venue’s use of her name was why she could not simply ignore the event, condemned what she called Trump’s “hate show,” criticized his immigration policies and rhetoric about women, and endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Why Ronstadt spoke out before the rally
Trump’s September 12, 2024, campaign rally took place at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall in Tucson. In a statement dated the previous day and marked “San Francisco,” Ronstadt said she would have preferred to ignore the rally, but felt obliged to respond because the building bore her name. The rally and statement are reported by AZFamily and the Arizona Daily Star.

Ronstadt wrote: “Donald Trump is holding a rally on Thursday in a rented hall in my hometown, Tucson. I would prefer to ignore that sad fact. But since the building has my name on it, I need to say something.” She described Tucson as a city with “deep Mexican-American roots and a joyful, tolerant spirit,” and called Trump’s appearance a “hate show.” Those phrases express Ronstadt’s view, not a neutral description of the rally.
What Ronstadt criticized
Immigration and family separation
Ronstadt focused on the Trump administration’s family-separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border and the effects on families seeking asylum. She wrote that the policy “made orphans of thousands of little children and babies.” That is her characterization; the sources reporting her statement do not independently establish that wording as a verified count.

She also wrote, “There is no forgiving or forgetting the heartbreak he caused.” The statement’s criticism was directed at Trump’s record and rhetoric as she understood them, rather than being an account of a new action at the Tucson rally.
Women and JD Vance’s “childless cat lady” remarks
Ronstadt also criticized what she described as Trump’s hostility toward women and people of color, and addressed remarks by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, about “childless cat ladies.” She answered with a personal reference to her life in Tucson: “I raised two adopted children in Tucson as a single mom. They are both grown and living in their own houses. I live with a cat.”

Her endorsement and the 2024 context
Ronstadt concluded by saying she would vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. At the time, Trump was the Republican presidential nominee and Harris and Walz were the Democratic ticket. Her statement was an endorsement in the 2024 campaign, not a current election recommendation.

Ronstadt used the word “rapist” in her statement. The legal distinction matters: in E. Jean Carroll’s civil case, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse, not rape, and it was not a criminal conviction. The Guardian reported that a judge later said the conduct found by the jury constituted rape in common parlance. That clarification does not change the jury’s formal finding or turn the civil case into a criminal conviction. The Guardian’s account explains the distinction.
