The notice projected that Winamp.com and related web services would stop after December 20, 2013, and that Winamp Media players would no longer be available to download. Winamp’s official homepage currently presents the player and links to an app download.
What the 2013 goodbye notice said
Rob Williams’s HotHardware article, published November 20, 2013, reported a warning on Winamp’s official website: “Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download.” The wording described a planned end to the site’s web services and player downloads after that date.
That was a report about software and online services, not a physical product. The notice set out an intended shutdown; it does not by itself establish what ultimately happened to the services or explain the later timeline. HotHardware’s November 20, 2013 report is the source for the historical warning.
Why the headline mentions a llama
“Winamp, it really whips the Llama’s ass” was Winamp’s memorable tagline, recalled in Williams’s article. The story also says the line appeared as an audio sample included with the player. The headline’s farewell wording plays on that phrase; it is not a quote from a named Winamp spokesperson.

Is Winamp shutting down now?
The 2013 headline should not be read as a current shutdown announcement. As accessed October 4, 2026, Winamp’s official homepage presents Winamp as a player and links to an app download. That confirms a current product presence, but the page does not establish the full service history or provide enough detail to substantiate current features, supported platforms, pricing, or ownership history.
What changed in Winamp’s fortunes
Williams described Winamp as a familiar player from the rise of MP3 music and said it no longer had the audience it once did. He pointed to smartphones and cloud streaming as changes in how people listened. These were qualitative observations in a 2013 article: it supplied no audience or usage figure, so they should not be treated as measured statistics or a current market comparison.

Versions and alternatives in the 2013 account
The article observed that some longtime users preferred classic Winamp 2.x, while also mentioning version 5.x. It named Foobar2000 as an enthusiast alternative. Those references capture the author’s 2013 discussion, not a current assessment of compatibility, security, features, or cost.
| Option mentioned | What the 2013 article establishes |
|---|---|
| Winamp 2.x | Some users who stayed with Winamp preferred classic 2.x versions, according to Williams. |
| Winamp 5.x | Mentioned as another Winamp version; no feature or compatibility comparison is provided. |
| Foobar2000 | Named as an enthusiast alternative; the article gives no structured comparison. |
The story’s wider context was the shift from local PC music playback toward smartphones and cloud streaming. It does not provide enough evidence to recommend one of these options for a reader today.
