Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department set Spotify’s record for the most-streamed album in a single day on its release date, April 19, 2024. Spotify said it was the first album in the service’s history to exceed 300 million streams in one day; Guinness World Records later reported a filtered total of 313.7 million.
What Spotify’s opening record means
“Opening record” here means streams during one calendar day on Spotify—not first-week sales, total listening across platforms, or album units sold. Spotify said the album became the service’s most-streamed album of 2024 in a single day less than 12 hours after its release, then reported that it had passed 300 million streams that day. Spotify’s April 19, 2024 announcement identifies the release date and calls the album Swift’s 11th studio album.
How many Spotify streams did it get on release day?
Guinness World Records reported 313.7 million filtered Spotify streams on April 19, 2024. The figure covers the standard album and the additional tracks released as The Anthology; it is not Spotify’s own precise figure, since Spotify’s announcement gave the milestone as “over 300 million.”
| Release-day component | Tracks | Filtered Spotify streams |
|---|---|---|
| Standard The Tortured Poets Department | 16 | 232.2 million |
| The Anthology addition | 15 | 81.4 million |
| Combined expanded release | 31 | 313.7 million |
These figures and the edition breakdown were published by Guinness World Records on April 25, 2024. The reported components sum to 313.6 million because the figures are rounded; the published combined total is 313.7 million.

How it compared with Swift’s previous Spotify record
Guinness says the previous record for most-streamed album on Spotify in one day belonged to Swift’s Midnights, which received 184.6 million streams on October 21, 2022. The comparison is between single-day album streams on Spotify, not sales or weekly totals.
“Fortnight” also set a one-day record
“Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)” was Spotify’s most-streamed song in one day on April 19, 2024. Guinness reported 25.2 million streams for the track that day. This is a track-level record, separate from the album’s 313.7 million total.

Spotify’s later weekly milestone
The release-day record was followed by a different platform milestone: Spotify says The Tortured Poets Department became its most-streamed album in a single week on April 22, 2024. In an announcement dated April 24, Spotify also said the album had passed one billion streams since release. Those are weekly and cumulative measures, respectively, not additions to the release-day figure. Spotify’s April 24 announcement describes both milestones.
How the U.S. first-week numbers differ
Separate U.S. figures show the album’s scale in its debut week, but they should not be treated as part of Spotify’s global, single-day tally. The Associated Press reported that Luminate measured 891.34 million U.S. album streams for the week and 2.61 million U.S. equivalent album units. The unit figure included 1.91 million traditional album sales and 859,000 vinyl units. The figures use a different geography, period, and measurement from Spotify’s release-day record. The Associated Press report, published April 28, 2024, attributes the U.S. measures to Luminate.

What the record does—and does not—establish
The documented record is specifically Spotify’s most-streamed album in one day, achieved on April 19, 2024. The cited announcements establish Spotify platform totals and Guinness’s filtered breakdown, but do not provide directly comparable audited totals across all streaming services. They also do not establish whether a later release has surpassed the record, so it is best described as the record set in 2024 rather than asserted as the current all-time record.
