In a 2019 Women’s Health interview, Julianne Hough recalled telling her then-husband Brooks Laich, “You know I’m not straight, right?” She described the conversation as part of a period of personal change and greater openness in their relationship. In 2024, she returned to the subject and said her experience was not about choosing a label such as straight, gay, bisexual, or queer.
What Julianne Hough told Brooks Laich
Hough recounted the conversation in an interview published by Women’s Health on August 1, 2019, as part of its September issue. She remembered telling Laich, “You know I’m not straight, right?” When he responded, “I’m sorry, what?” she said, “I’m not. But I choose to be with you.” Women’s Health reproduced the exchange, and ABC News also reported the central quote at the time.

Hough and Laich married in July 2017, according to ABC’s 2019 report. In the interview, she spoke about her own experience; her words do not establish a more specific orientation label.
Why she said she shared it
Hough placed the conversation within what she called a “massive transformation.” She described developing Kinrgy, her dance-based workout method, alongside a process of “de-layering” what she called survival tactics. In her account, that personal work helped her become more open with Laich and build greater intimacy in the relationship. The Women’s Health profile also quoted her describing a sense of safety in voicing thoughts she had been afraid to admit, including feelings tied to shame, guilt, and how she had been raised.

How Hough described it again in 2024
In August 2024, Hough discussed the subject on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. E! News reported that she called coming out “one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do.” She also said her experience was not about identifying as straight, gay, bisexual, or queer; she was still learning what love and attraction meant to her.
That later reflection adds context to the 2019 interview without changing its central point: Hough described telling Laich she was “not straight” while also saying she chose to be with him. Neither account warrants assigning her a label she did not claim.
