In a February 2025 interview, actor Christopher Rich compared the effects of his 2018 stroke and brain injury to being hit by “an atomic bomb.” He used the phrase to describe his personal experience, not as a clinical description. He also called the aftermath a “hard reset” as he discussed the complications, recovery and return to acting.
What Christopher Rich said about his stroke
Rich described the lasting impact of the stroke and brain injury in an interview published by Us Weekly on February 19, 2025: “After my stroke and having a brain injury, it is like I got hit with an atomic bomb. So it all gets traumatized, and it is a hard reset.” The comparison is Rich’s own metaphor for what happened to him; it should not be read as a medical explanation of stroke.
What happened after the 2018 stroke
Stroke symptoms he described
Rich has said the stroke happened on Easter morning in 2018. He described being paralyzed on his left side and, at the time, unable to walk or use his left arm. Other reporting has recounted changes to his voice and memory. These details describe his individual experience, not a checklist of symptoms or a prediction for other people. Fox News reported the timing and his recollections; USA Today’s account, republished by Yahoo, also described his symptoms.
Blood clots and pulmonary embolisms
In the Us Weekly interview, Rich said that after leaving the hospital and beginning to move around again, he developed blood clots. He said he was hospitalized with pulmonary embolisms and material on his heart. His account places those complications after the initial stroke and early movement; the interview does not establish a general medical relationship or treatment guidance.

How Rich returned to acting
Rich returned to on-screen acting with an appearance on Happy’s Place alongside Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman, reconnecting with his former Reba colleagues. In a February 20, 2025 interview with TVLine’s Ryan Schwartz, he said he felt ready to work again: “I really do feel like I’m ready to just hit it back again, and go do some more fun stuff. I love working.” Fox News also reported that Rich credited McEntire and Peterman with encouraging him to return to acting.
Rich said he welcomed the show’s reference to his character’s stroke because he wanted viewers to see that stroke survivors remain part of society. “Please put it out there that people have strokes, and we are still a part of society,” he told TVLine. He described that as the point he hoped the appearance would make—not a claim that every survivor will have the same recovery or work experience.

What his account does—and does not—establish
Rich’s interviews offer a personal account of stroke effects, complications, recovery and a return to acting. His statements that he was feeling “really, really good” and ready to work again were made in February 2025; they are not a current health update. They also cannot establish what recovery will look like for another person.
