But give Doctor Doom the exceptional power he holds in 2015’s Secret Wars, and Doom wins. Those are different matchups: that famous victory is not evidence that ordinary Doom reliably beats ordinary Thanos.
Who wins in a standard fight?
Thanos has the edge in a straightforward confrontation. Marvel’s character history presents him as a physically formidable cosmic opponent, making him the stronger default choice when neither villain is granted a special power-up or an elaborate preparation period. This is a reasoned comparison of their published histories, not an official Marvel ruling on a hypothetical fight.
Doom is far more than an armored fighter: his history includes sorcery and the ability to acquire power beyond his usual equipment. That makes him dangerous and adaptable, but it does not establish that he would beat Thanos in a neutral, baseline encounter. The outcome depends on which version of each character the question means.
What changes when they have extraordinary power?
Thanos with the Infinity Gems
Marvel’s Thanos history says he gathered all six Infinity Gems—the Soul, Power, Time, Reality, Space and Mind Gems—and used them to erase half the universe. This is an extraordinary story feat, not proof that Thanos automatically enters every fight with the Gems. Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet reading list points to the story behind that power.

Doom with the Power Cosmic
Marvel’s Doctor Doom history records that he stole the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer. It is evidence that Doom has, in particular stories, reached well beyond the capabilities of his ordinary armor and sorcery. It does not mean he permanently retains that power in every appearance.
God Emperor Doom in Secret Wars
The key exception is 2015’s Secret Wars. In that story, Doom holds extraordinary power as Battleworld’s master and defeats Thanos. Marvel’s hardcover listing for the 2015 series describes survivors of a multiversal catastrophe bending their knee to Doom and collects issues #1–8. For background on the event and Doom’s role, see Marvel’s Secret Wars guide.

That result answers a specific question: Doom can defeat Thanos when empowered at this exceptional level. It does not settle who would win in a fight between their ordinary versions.

A useful matchup needs to specify more than the names on the page. Consider the characters’ baseline abilities, any exceptional resources they bring, how much preparation Doom has, and what counts as winning. Infinity Gems, the Power Cosmic and Doom’s Secret Wars power are distinct story conditions; none should be silently assumed in a standard fight.

What to read for the on-page result
For Doom’s empowered victory, read the 2015 Secret Wars story; Marvel’s hardcover collects issues #1–8. For Thanos’s Infinity Gem feat, Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet reading list is a relevant starting point. These stories show what the characters can do in particular circumstances, rather than providing a controlled ranking for every possible version or fight setup.
