Merrily We Roll Along is Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical about three friends in show business, told in reverse chronological order. It opens with the adults facing the consequences of choices and compromises, then moves back toward the ambitions and friendship they shared when they were young.
What is Merrily We Roll Along about?
The musical follows three friends whose lives intersect through artistic ambition, work in entertainment, and a changing friendship. Rather than beginning with their early hopes and moving toward success, the story starts later in their lives, when fractures and disappointments are already visible. It then travels back toward the younger people they once were.
The reverse journey makes memory part of the experience: viewers know some of what the friends will lose before they see what they hoped to build. The show examines ambition, compromise, friendship, and changing ideals. That is more complicated than a simple lesson that success destroys friendship; the characters’ choices and relationships are the subject, not a single moral.
Why is the story told backwards?
The chronology runs from 1976 back to 1957, spanning nearly two decades. Beginning near the end gives the audience the outcome before the origins: as the story moves backward, earlier scenes reveal the aspirations and bonds that preceded the adult relationships onstage at the beginning. The structure invites viewers to reconsider what they have seen as the characters’ past comes into focus.

Who wrote Merrily We Roll Along?
Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics, and George Furth wrote the book. Their musical is based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1934 play of the same name. The musical opened on Broadway on November 16, 1981. Concord Theatricals describes the original Broadway run as lasting two weeks; the work later returned in productions including Off-Broadway and London.
How did the 2023–24 Broadway revival develop?
Director Maria Friedman’s Broadway revival followed earlier productions in London and at New York Theatre Workshop. Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez played the central trio. Friedman had performed as Mary in a 1992 British production and directed a 2012 Menier Chocolate Factory version. Associated Press reported that the musical had been revised over time through collaboration with Sondheim and Furth, including changes made with Friedman. Those reported details describe part of the production’s history, not a complete record of every revision.

Where can you listen to the cast recording?
Masterworks Broadway announced the revival’s New Broadway Cast Recording as a digital release. It is a way to hear the score and performances, but an album is not the same as seeing the staging and acting of a production. The announcement establishes a digital release; it does not establish that a CD or vinyl edition is available. Check the label’s current listing and the services available in your territory for up-to-date access.
Where can theatre-makers find the script and rights information?
Concord Theatricals is the official starting point for the musical’s script and licensing information. Theatre-makers should consult its current listing for applicable materials and performance-rights details; availability, formats, territories, and terms can change.

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Sony Pictures Classics acquired the live-filmed version of the Broadway production, and Fathom Entertainment has a release page.
