James Marsden was among 41 people reported to have written letters supporting Brian Peck before Peck’s 2004 sentencing. The letters became a subject of public attention after the 2024 docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. Reporting quotes Marsden praising Peck as a mentor and friend, but does not establish what Marsden knew about the charges when he wrote.

What James Marsden’s letter reportedly said

Us Weekly reported that Marsden described Peck as a mentor and friend, credited him with guidance and support in his acting career, and wrote that he had known Peck for 14 years (Us Weekly). The Independent reproduced this sentence from Marsden’s letter: “I assure you, what Brian has been through in the last year is the suffering of a hundred men” (The Independent). That is Marsden’s reported wording about Peck’s experience; it is not an independent assessment of the case or of the harm to Drake Bell.

What the letters were and how they became public

The Independent and Us Weekly reported that 41 letters were submitted to the judge before Peck’s sentencing. The directors of Quiet on Set, Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz, told Us Weekly they petitioned a Los Angeles court to unseal the letters and that the letters had not been public when they first sought them (Us Weekly). The reporting identifies some writers, not a complete list of all 41.

Other named writers

Reports also named Taran Killam, Alan Thicke, Ron Melendez, Rider Strong and Will Friedle among the people who wrote letters supporting Peck (Us Weekly; The Independent). The count refers to letters; it should not be read as a verified count of 41 unique public figures.

Peck’s case and the timing

Peck pleaded no contest to two child sexual abuse charges and was sentenced in 2004. The Independent reported that he received 16 months in prison and was required to register as a sex offender (The Independent). The letters were written before that sentencing; their later public discussion followed the documentary’s release in 2024.

What reporting establishes—and what it does not

The reporting documents Marsden’s letter and excerpts from its contents, but it does not establish what he knew about the charges at the time he wrote. The Independent said supporters’ knowledge was unclear. The available accounts do not provide a directly linked copy of the court-file letters, and they do not establish a public response from Marsden after the 2024 coverage. Those limits do not justify attributing knowledge, intent, or a later position to him.

How other letter writers later described their decisions

Other writers made separate statements about their own letters. Us Weekly reported that Joanna Kerns said her letter was based on misinformation and that, with what she later knew, she would not have written it. The same report quoted Tom DeSanto saying he had incomplete information and apologizing to Bell and his family (Us Weekly). The Los Angeles Times reported that Strong and Friedle later expressed regret on their podcast (Los Angeles Times). These accounts concern those individuals; they do not establish what Marsden knew or thought.

Drake Bell and the documentary’s follow-up

The Los Angeles Times reported that Bell discussed the letters and their impact in a bonus episode of Quiet on Set in April 2024 (Los Angeles Times). The newspaper said the episode was available on Max at that time; current availability may vary by date and region.
