What did Trump say in his inauguration speech?
Trump delivered his second inaugural address on January 20, 2025, in the Capitol Rotunda. The Associated Press put the speech at 30 minutes; the Los Angeles Times described it as nearly 30 minutes. Its recurring theme was national restoration, paired with specific policy declarations and proposals. These were promises and statements made in the address, not evidence by themselves that a policy was subsequently implemented or legally effective.

Six highlights from the address
1. A promised “golden age” and America First agenda
Trump opened with, “The golden age of America begins right now.” He pledged to put America first and portrayed the country as entering a new era of national success.
2. Immigration and border enforcement
He promised to declare a border emergency, deport people, reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy and end birthright citizenship for certain children of undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors. The address records those pledges; it does not establish their implementation or resolve their legal effects.

3. Expanded domestic energy production
Trump called for more domestic energy production, announced an intended national energy emergency and used the phrase “American oil.”
4. The Panama Canal and place names
Calling the transfer of the Panama Canal unfair, Trump said, “we’re taking it back.” He also proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and restoring the name Mount McKinley. These were proposals voiced in the address.

5. Government censorship and free speech
Trump promised an executive order to stop government censorship, presenting the issue as a restoration of free speech.
6. Federal gender policy
He said federal policy would recognize two genders, male and female. That was a statement about intended government policy, not a neutral description of sex or gender as a whole.

How did media coverage frame the speech?
The Associated Press’s same-day review of broadcast and online headlines found sharply divergent interpretations. Historian Jon Meacham, speaking on NBC, called it “the most partisan inaugural that I think I know of in American history,” as quoted by AP. Conservative commentator Scott Jennings praised the address. AP also noted CNN fact-checking Trump’s later remarks and contrasting headlines from The Daily Beast and The Daily Wire. This evidence supports a picture of divided media framing, not a conclusion about what all viewers thought.
